Review Robin Hood (2010) ***SPOLIER ALERT***

I'm a big fan of Robin Hood, by that I mean I've read about him in Piers Plowman by William Langland, and even the Orygynale Chronicle of Andrew of Wyntoun among others, this was during a lit class that delved into Middle English, and even Shakespeare mentioned him, I'll give you to the end of this to remember which.  If you want to read the best of the lot, try Howard Pyle's The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood and Parke Godwin's Sherwood.  Pyle's is the version everyone knows, and Godwin resets the story in the time of William the Conqueror.  Both very good.

I watched the newest version today, and its a really mixed review.  I like Russel Crowe in historical stuff, he was good in Gladiator and Master and Commander to name a few.  Ridley Scott is a mixed bag though, Blade Runner is amazing, Alien is awesome, Legend was adequate, Thelma & Louise is a great sleeping pill substitute and Gladiator is of course, great.  Then comes his more recent stuff, Black Hawk Down, Hannibal and Kingdom of Heaven are crap, American Gangster is good and we won't even mention that idiotic Apple commercial he bored the piss out of us with during Super Bowl XVIII.  Robin Hood is neither as good or as crappy as his previous movies.  Its stuck in the middle.

The plot isn't bad, they tried to introduce more plot elements but that was mainly heavy borrowing or outright theft from other books and movies.  The put a little of the old to movie style romances, the curtain between robin and Marian from an old Clark Gable movie.  They stole the lost boys from Peter Pan and put them into Sherwood, and the worst was their attempt to make Marian Eowyn from the Lord of the Rings.

That last one should have never been, Cate Blanchett has played many strong women from Elizabeth I to Galadriel and Ridley Scott brought us Ripley in Alien.  Blew it in this one though.  Marian dresses as a man in armor and leads the aforementioned lost boys to fight the weak-assed looking French invasion as it poured out of wooden barges that look just like WWII amphibious invasion... by the way the holes in the side for sweeps (oars) would be the perfect place for the rarely tranquil English Channel to swamp the silly things.

Marian see's the bad-guy (that killed an elderly and very important guy in a predictably evil way,) clapped her visor down and charged the bad-guy.  She wound up flat on her back being drowned in the surf when Rob totally steals the 'big codpiece moment' and dives from a running horse and breaks up the soggy rasslin' match.  Then after a big brawl between Robin and the Bad Guy, Robin finally thinks to get her head above water, revives her with a mediocre-looking kiss and carries her out like a baby.

What the hell?

There have been many versions of Robin Hood over the years.  Way back when there was the 'everybody's too clean' version with the not very clean Errol Flynn, not bad and Olivia de Havilland was too freaking adorable for words.  Kevin Costner had no reason to play Robin Hood, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was bored and listless as Marian, and Christian Slater as whoever the hell he wasted our time playing.  Alan Rickman did kick ass as the Sheriff of Nottingham, which blew away the pissant version of the Sheriff in the current incarnation.  If you want to know where both movies did well, casting of Robin's father (or pretend daddy, long story,) Brian Blessed and Max von Sydow were both badassed selections.

Men in Tights was pretty good, Mel Brooks always turns in something worth watching, and this was an interesting take on the whole legend.  I'm avoiding the various TV version of Robin Hood, I'm afraid that to do so would earn me a trial at the Hague for crimes against humanity.  When you get right down to it the best version of Robin Hood ever made was from Disney.  Roger Miller narrating and singing, foxes and critters and Pat Buttram, no friggin' way to lose on that one.  When you get right down to it the Disney version was helluva lot more historically accurate and believable.

Overall, I'll probably watch it again, and if I have to rate it I'll go 3 out of 5 stars.

By the way, the answer to the mystery question was Two Gentlemen of Verona.
How many need to read back and see what the question was again?
