Neon Light Runners #1: Prelude
« on: December 16, 2009, 06:28:26 PM »
It was an abandoned mental asylum.  Every cell and room was empty, except for one.

Right of the heart at the building was a locked door which had taken many hours for Mikhail to open up.  Inside was more than he could have asked for -- it even beat the time he got that red bicycle for his thirteenth birthday.  He loved that bike.

"Adalinda?"

A strange mask covered her face, a dozen tubes and wires poked through the porcelain which had kept her alive for the three years of loneliness.  The feeding tube was the largest, stretching her mouth open wide and preventing any real, audible conversation.  Maybe that was a good thing, she had to listen before he'd let her talk.

"You'll never guess who this is."

The silence was something she had grown accustomed to. Nothing but the sound of her own breathing. Her own, semi-sane thoughts to keep her company. That was it. It had only been 3 years. But it felt like a lifetime had gone by. Maybe 3 years was a life time. Who knows. Adalinda sure didn't anymore. She just knew that she had been locked away. Out of sight. For years. It left a burning hole of rage inside her. If many thought she was sadistic before... were they in for a surprise when she finally got out of here. It was uncomfortable, it was dark. And disgusting. Nobody had the right to treat her like this! Nobody. Not even Jareth. The man who had locked here away. And why? Because of a silly little dispute that they had had. Silly. Funny how she believed it to be silly now. When then, it felt worthy of a fight. Clearly, the winner of that was obvious.
So, here she was. Locked away like some shameful creature. After being isolated for so long, the sound of someone working away at her locked door didn't really register to her. She didn't understand what it meant. It was.. an odd sound.
Adalinda sat there listening, listening to the sounds that meant someone else besides her must be alive in this building. Unless it was an indication that the building was finally starting to fall apart. But no, she was sure she now understood what that sound was.
Finally, it opened. The door swung in and one word was said at first. Her name. Someone knew her. For three years she always had to repeat to herself, what her name was. Adalinda... that's what she was called. Adalinda Knapp.

The voice was almost reconizable. She remembered it, from long ago. But pin pointing it, was not something she was able to do. The corners of her mouth twitched, friend... foe? Being unable to see was not very helpful. So instead, she waited. Waited for them to reveal themselves. Whoever he was.

Her potential-rescuer flickered his torch over the woman's body.  It was ironic that Adalinda Knapp had now succumbed to being a patient in her own mental institution.  No, this wasn't her mental institution.  It was a fake, a brick-by-brick replica of something in the real world.  This wasn't the real world.  It was a nightmare.  And neither him nor the damsel-in-distress (Adalinda being a damsel-in-distress?  Ha!) could leave that nightmare.

The straitjacket kept her in a permanent hugging pose, while on closer inspection, the porcelain mask which kept her visually impaired had the design of a china doll sketched on it.  The eyes were blacked out, and the mouth was in an O-shape, which allowed the feeding tube to twist inside.  From above, there was a soft hum, and the semi-transparent hose began to gently shake.  Must be lunch time for her.

Mikhail watched in fascination, the process in how she had remained alive for such a long time.  A dark substance trickled slowly down the tube, through the mask and in to her mouth.  Then came the humiliating gurgling sound as if she were struggling to consume the entire meal flowing in to her mouth.  It was a shame for her that Mikhail couldn't feel sorry for the pathetic scene in front of him.

He knew it was her, even if she didn't respond to her name being called.  It was the hair and the boots.  He never knew a single other person that walked around with either.  Jareth had felt he was being nice by allowing her to remain wearing her heels when she was thrown in this small cell.

Mikhail remained anonymous.

"Adalinda.  Oh, Ada, Ada, Ada.  You wait for years for him to let you in his world, and this is how you end up?"

He leaned in closer.

"Now you're the one locked in a cell, and I'm the one in control.  Guess that makes us even.  No.  To make us even, I'm gonna have to fuck up your eyes like you did with mine."

She always hated this part... when whatever it was that Jareth was feeding her, to keep her alive came through, down the tube and into her mouth. It tasted disgusting. It was thick, like tar. It was always a struggle to get the awful substance down her throat, fast enough so that it didn't just decide to suffocate her. And now... as she was struggling to deal with this little part of her day.. evening, whatever it was. Someone was there to be witness. The great Adalinda... great.. yes that's what she was once. Feared by all. Admired by plenty. And loved by one. Or so she had thought. And now she was in this disgusting mess. Had been, for years. And her only hopes of leaving it seemed, was this person before her.. around her, that seemed to know her.
The more he spoke, the more the voice began to be reconized by her memory. She was slowly starting to put together an image. Perhaps a name would follow soon behind. She wasn't sure. Couldn't be for certain. Not after so long. Ada was lucky to have never forgotten her own name. She forgot plenty of other things. His footsteps let her know when he was coming closer, and Adalinda couldn't help but feel completely volnerable. What could she do to protect herself against this man, should he decide to attack her? All of the tubes basically kept her immobile, and the mask that covered her face kept her from knowing exactly where he was.
His eyes?... What did she have to do with his eyes? She'd never...
A startled, surprised sound came from her throat. Adalinda knew who it was. She thought so. Though she couldn't be completely certain. Moving her feet across the floor, she brought them closer to her, using them to feel and find where he was. Her pumps brushed against his foot and she quickly raised her leg, and slammed her heel into the back of his leg, bringing him to his knees. Silly, even now, he thought he could harm her.
Adalinda couldn't help but smirk around the tube lodged in my mouth. How ironic it was to be him, that found her. If he, was infact who she believed him to be.
Jareth was a man who knew magics. She was sure that he would have forseen someone coming, and finding her sooner or later. There was no way, he hadn't 'protected' her from someone touching her, without the visitor feeling some sort of painful moment. But she wasn't sure, there really wasn't any way to tell, until he touched her.

The attack took him by surprise.  Mikhail didn't know why he thought it was safe to walk right up to Adalinda Knapp without worrying about some trick she had under her sleeve.  In this case, it was a painful kick to the back of the leg.  The heel was like a blunt dagger attempting to break through his skin.  He collapsed to his knees and knew that she was grinning behind that porcelain mask of hers.  Her lips forming a smile around the large hose which had stretched open her mouth for three years.

Quickly, he crawled backwards, away from her swinging legs.  "Oh, I bet you think that's funny, don't you?  Well guess what?  You're still sitting there tied up in that straitjacket and mask.  You can't go anywhere.  And unless you want out of there, you're gonna listen to everything I tell you.  Understand?"

He climbed back to his feet and rubbed the back of his leg.  She was going to suffer for that.  Mikhail went to grab her mask, then stopped.  He still wanted to talk to her without listening to that voice of hers coming back.

"You hate him, don't you?  I can help you get revenge.  Get back at the man that put you here.  You'd like that, wouldn't you?"

The red haired German woman did infact, find it funny. He fell like a broken chair. Just, collapsed. She couldn't see it, but she heard it. He was stupid, a stupid man to think she was going to allow him to just.. touch her. If she could have laughed, she would have. Out of pure amusement. Adalinda was untouchable. This was a very known, and true fact. She didn't play around when it came to such things. Oh no. Infact, Adalinda had once heard people say that even in death, she wouldn't be harmed that was, if she could die. It had made her smile once. But as of late... until Mikhail had shown up, she sat there, wishing that she would somehow just die. Instead of living in this terrible reality that she had been forced into.
Adalinda couldn't help but love.. how he simply pointed out the obvious. Like she didn't know about it already. Or perhaps, he just loved to hear himself talk. Seemed reasonable enough. There was a small feeling of impatience building up inside her. The wanting to hear her own voice once again, instead of the toneless voice she began to hear in her head. She forgot what her own voice sounded like...
There really was no other choice, than to listen to him speak. To say what he felt like he needed to say. As long as he stayed out of her reach, she couldn't really do anything. So, she sat there, and under that mask, she listened. Nodding her head ever so slowly. Oh she did. Adalinda truly did hate that man. So much, she could just imagine all the terrible things she would love to do to him... if given the chance. She wanted that chance.
"So... what is it you have in mind, Mikhail?" she thought.

"Well.  I need to find that man.  And this is a pretty big place for me to go hunting for him myself.  But you, Ada.  You're the one that can take me right to him.  After all, weren't you Queen of this little twisted world?"

The man that transported him here had taken away all of his weapons, understandable of course.  Although Mikhail was a little worried that he had found Adalinda so easily.  He was expecting some tough expedition to gain access to the hospital, but instead it was quite easy.

"I can get you out of here.  Out of this little prison of yours.  Of course, we'd have to settle some ground rules before I did anything.  I know what you're like, what you'd do to me at the first opportunity.  That's not gonna happen.  I'll just drag you all the way back here and you'll never get out.  We got a deal?"

Wasn't she?  Once upon a time, Adalinda was infact, had been the Queen of this world Jareth had created. Ruled over, and dominated with a feared fist. But, that was 'long' ago. And now, she had been reduced to nothing but one of the victims of his labyrinth. Stripped  of her title, her 'love', and most of her pride.

Mikhail was basically right, she could take him straight to Jareth. She was the only one, out of teh two that really knew her way through the labyrinth that they were currently stuck in. Wouldn't it be nice anyways, for her to get her little pale hands on that mans flesh? Especially after what he did to her.. it would be oh so nice. So nice.

Beginning to grow impatient, Adalinda just wanted out of her prison. Sure, her and Mikhail could work together for as long as it took for them to get to the center, to Jareth's castle. And then... well, Adalinda had her very own plans of what was going to happen after that. She had since the moment the door closed, locking her inside three years ago.

With a nodd of her head, she agreed to what Mikhail said.

She had heard what he had to say, and on first appearances, had agreed to the terms.  He didn't think she would try anything before they actually reached his castle, or what ever he lived in.  Going by first appearances here, Jareth probably stayed in a large manor floating on top of a large, fluffy cloud with a magical staircase which led up to it.

Reaching forward, Mikhail began to remove her bondage.  But something startled him!

More than startled, he had never felt such pain before!  As soon as smallest millimetre of skin touched the porcelain mask on her face, Mikhail was thrown back against the wall, suddenly convulsing in tremendous shock!  There had been a spell, a trap!  Jareth had no intention of letting Adalinda be released this easily, and the Russian saviour had just felt the full force of what would happen.

"Ugh-"  He grunted.  Mikhail suddenly passed out.
