Beyond the Rainbow
« on: July 24, 2009, 02:08:56 PM »
Elizabeth didn't exactly know when, or even how, she learned about Astral Travel, or that she could do it.  But the first time she stepped beyond the boundaries of her body, or was at least aware that she was doing it, it felt like the most natural thing in the world.

Of course, that was after she stopped freaking out and thinking she was dead.  It's rather unsettling to open your eyes and find that you're looking at yourself.  But the presence of the silver chord, that string of energy that ties the soul to the body, reassured her.  It hummed gently, like a vibrating piano string, and was warm to the touch when her fingers gingerly brushed it.

She was in the hospital again.  With a sigh, Elizabeth looked at herself in the bed.  The machines blipped and chirped away, reading something or other from her body.  Everything seemed to be normal enough.  She looked at the bandaging and casts, figuring that she must have been out for a while.  How much time had she lost this time?  At least the bruising was still vibrant, so it couldn't have been days.  Probably only hours.

With an almost absent curiosity, she began to meander around the room.  It was strange, but everything seemed to be muted, as if she were looking through a fog.  But on the other hand, there were colors that seemed more vibrant than she'd ever seen before.  Her body, and even some of the machines seemed to be ringed in color.  Like an aura.  She didn't think it was heat, because the color around her, a subtle, if rich shade of mahogany, was different from the machines, which were icy and blue, standing out from the surrounding surfaces while simultaneously fading into them.  It was strange, to say the least...

A nurse came in, completely oblivious to the girl who stood outside of herself in the room.  Elizabeth scuttled hurriedly out of the way, but smiled at her friend.  An older woman named Matilda, with vibrant curly red hair that she swore she never died, though more than once Elizabeth had spied gray hairs that magically vanished the next time she saw the woman.  She was nearly old enough to be her grandmother, and yet the nurse felt more like a beloved aunt.  So she hated to see the sad eyes the woman gave her sleeping body when she came in to check on her status.

"Oh child...look what he's done to you this time..."  Her voice, like the rest of her, was soft and muted, but her aura flared to life, warm and pervasive, filled with care and love.  Just seeing the warm shifting colors surrounding the woman made Elizabeth feel the same way she did when she got a hug from the nurse.  She felt like she mattered.  Like someone cared about her.

"Aunt Tildy...  You worry too much."  Elizabeth smiled.  But, her friend couldn't hear her.  In the same place, but worlds apart...

((Ok, I'm going with a different approach this time.  I'm just going to throw stuff down as it pops in my head, chronology be damned!  Which means...you're going to see the ending before the beginning or middle, lol.))

"You're here again?" Axiom smiled, drifting down to sit beside her on the swingset, and pushed himself to swinging idly.  Illia smiled back, a hint of sadness in the corner of her mouth, but she didn't let him see it.

"Oh, you know me.  Predictably unpredictable," she laughed gently, and after a moment's consideration, began to swing as well.  She knew they weren't real, but she liked the way the air rushed past her wings.  A sensation only open to her in this place.  But, there was so much that she would only find here.

"You're becoming a lot more predictable of late," he shot back, still smiling, but there was an edge of concern to his words.  It caught Illia by surprise, and she looked to him with lifted brows.

"How do you mean?"

"Well...you're here a lot more often lately.  For me, it's kind of my job, but you...  You show up at the strangest times."

"Well, you caught me," she sighed dramatically, and resumed her swinging, letting her head fall back to gaze up at the muted sky.  "I'm secretly in love with you.  I've been stalking you this entire time."  She laughed at his expression when she glanced to him, utterly deadpan and completely unconvinced.

"I mean it Illia...  You're not getting hooked, are you?"

She stopped her goofing off, and slowed the swing to stop beside him.  It was something he had warned her about, back when they first met on the Plane.  People discovered Astral walking, and they found that they enjoyed it so much more than their real lives, that they lost themselves to the ether.  Like a drug, you no longer wanted to live your real life, you had to be in the astral just to feel normal.  Escapists, they were called by the more leisurely traveler.  Axiom had witnessed a lot of people taken in by the surreal beauty of this place.  He had warned her to be careful that it didn't happen to her.  She could see it in his eyes, that he was worried about that.  But, it wasn't that.  Depending on how you looked at it, it might be worse.  Or better, to her.  At least, she thought so.

"No, Ax, not hooked..."  She lowered her gaze to her feet, letting her hair fall around her face.  Such pretty blonde hair that she could never have in real life...  "I'm in the hospital again..."  She heard his soft gasp from her side, and part of her was comforted by his concern.

"Illia...how long this time?  It's been several days, almost in a row, that I've found you here..."  How bad was it?  What was happening to her?"

"I'm not sure...I've lost track of time.  I know I'm still alive at least," she laughed softly, little more than a breath of air, as she brushed her fingers over her chord that trailed from her sternum.  "But...I haven't been back to my body in a while.  When I go, all I can do is stare at myself.  If I go back in, it's just black.  I just sleep, and when I wake up, I'm back outside again."  She heard his swing shift as he stood, but only gripped the chains of hers tighter as warm tears burned at her eyes.  "I...I don't think I'm going to wake up this time..."

He was suddenly behind her, wrapping her tightly in his arms and pressing his face into her hair.  "Illia..."  He didn't know what to say. What could he say?  His friend had essentially just told him that she was in a coma, and she couldn't wake up.  She was trapped here.  Sure, he liked it here, would sometimes choose the ether over any tropic location for a vacation, but there was always the draw of the real world.  The physical connection that you couldn't quite emulate here.  The colors and sounds and smells that were always muted here, but always so crisp and fresh at home.  There were those who lost themselves to the ether, and he pitied them for losing their grip on reality.  But Illia...it had been taken away from her.  She couldn't go back.  "Illia...I'm so sorry..."

She was walking again...

When she woke up, she wasn't quite sure that she believed she had ever done it in the first place; perhaps it had been a dream?  But the dream had been so real...  She didn't tell anyone, as if just speaking of it could dull the memory.  Like when you tried to tell someone about a dream you had, the words never came close, and you found that, the more you tried to remember it to relate it, it seemed to vanish like smoke in the wind.  But the next night, as Elizabeth was settling to sleep, she thought to herself how much she would like to do it again.

So now, here she was, staring down at her sleeping body once more.  The clock on the wall proclaimed it to be just after 10 at night, and the hospital was quiet but for the dull sounds of machines in her room.  The chord was there, pulling gently at her center, reminding her that she was still connected to her body.  A literal life-line.  And while there was the slightest pull, it didn't tug tighter when she moved around.  Whether she was right next to her body or across the room, that tension was there, leading her back to her body, should she need it.  She wondered...  Go back...

Elizabeth awoke with a start, muscles twitching in preparation for action, before relaxing once more.  She looked around, genuinely shocked.  It had happened so fast...  An instantaneous yank, then a moment of black, and then she had been awake once more.  Well, at least it was nice to know that it would be so easy to return to her body...  But...now she was awake.  And unable to fall back to sleep.  "Well, great..."
