The Ultimate Choose-Your-Own-Adventure!

Shae Dravenmore:
I want to try something, and I hope you all will play along with me!  I'm going to write a CYOA, but I'm going to put it in Open RP because it will be all of you choosing what happens, via a poll.  The current poll will be placed at the head here, and you'll have a period of several days in which to respond.  I'm excited about this, so please play along with me!  I'll be gathering interest for the first bit, so please vote!

Shae Dravenmore:
The Story Begins...

You find yourself sitting alone at a table in the common room of the local tavern and inn, enjoying a meal after a long day of travel.  Your food is hot, your drink cold, your bed paid for, and the atmosphere relaxing.  You have recently finished a journey to escort a theif safely beyond the borders of the land that seeks his head, and he has paid you handsomely for your service.  You find yourself with enough money to live comfortably for a number of weeks, but settling down has never appealed to you.  You are a mercenary, and your services go out to the highest bidder.  Your home is the road, your calling to travel and take up quests and jobs for the glory and the riches of them.
You never intended to find such quests within this humble little town, but as you dine comfortably, you notice that as night falls, the occupants become...pensive.  A hush falls over the room as conversations fall to low tones, and nervous glances pass to the windows.  You overhear bits and peices of conversations from around the room, many of them speaking of the same topic.  Some months ago the queen was poisoned, and now lays in her chambers slowly dying, a spectre of her former beauty and grace.  The prince has gone missing, with not a single clue as to his whereabouts or his fate.  And since then, strange sounds and sightings of terrible beasts in the country side, and reports of children gone missing in the night, their frightened shrieks the only thing left of them as they are carried off into the darkness.
You continue your meal, and eventually leave to your room for the night, pondering these things.  These poor, frightened villagers could perhaps offer only a pittance of a reward to find their missing children, but to return the prince to his castle, or to find a cure for the queen, now that sounds like a quest more to your tastes.  You decide to ask the owner downstairs more about it in the morning, to find what clues you may before you continue on your journey.

Morning comes, and you descend to the common room once more, your gear in hand and a mission in mind.  However, when you arrive, the man and his wife are distraught, and saddened villagers gather round to offer their condolences.  It seems that he man's young daughter was stolen away that very night!  The mother caught only a glimpse of the creature that stole her child as it raced through the night, her daughter screaming and clutched in it's massive hand.  The mother sees your arrive, and heartbroken, she begs you to help them, for she sees that you are a swordsman, and your appearance is one of a man with great experience and skill.

What do you do?
Look for clues to hunt the beast
Find out which way it went and chase after it
Ignore their plight and continue on your way

Shae Dravenmore:
You would have rathered to continue on your way and make for the capital, but the heartache in the woman's eyes and voice stirs something in you, and her sobs appeal to your sense of compassion.  With a bit of hesitation, you agree, and her sorrow turns to hope.  The innkeeper, who has of yet said nothing to you, expresses his relief as well with a simple nod and a shake of your hand.  "Thank you, stranger."

You are able to gather a description of the missing girl, as well as what few details the mother and other villagers are able to provide.  The creature that stole the girl was taller than a man, and very broad across the shoulders.  It walked with a stoop, and used its massive arms as feet when it ran.  It seemed to be hairy, and ran to the east when it fled.  Some men of the village gave chase last night, but lost it in the forest.

You resupply for your search, many items generously donated or discounted, since you are searching for their missing children, and you follow their directions out of the town and into the forest.  It isn't long before you come upon the signs of something large having passed this way, and you find strange footprints in the soft earth.  Almost like the feet of a man, but vastly oversized and malformed.  You follow the trail for a couple miles, until it vanishes into a broad river.  It seems to be running slowly, but with the spring melt, you know it runs deep and fast below the calm surface.  However, it seems that your quarry has crossed ahead of you, as there are signs of the trail continuing across the river.

What do you do?

Attempt to swim across
Travel upstream to look for a safer crossing
Travel downstream to look for a safer crossing

Milady Kim:
I mark the spot so I can see it from both sides and look for a better way across the river.
