"They've been on the losing end for a very long time," Oldwine agreed. "And it makes them faster to break the rules, now more than ever."

"It would be nice to have peace for a while" she said adding a wistful tone. "I would like to be able to focus on building and securing the frontier."

"Securing the Frontier," Oldwine nodded. "And we're building toward that. There's still a lot of holes in our networks, and those should start to fill as we build up to spread wider in strength. It'll take a lot of the load from the shoulders from our current patrols."

"With everything else going on I have not had much opportunity to focus on the frontier. Or really even consider the needs beyond security. Roads, bridges and forts will be the first priorities, but outposts and mail will be necessary too. We don't want to overly civilize it, that would destroy its natural beauty, but there is still things that could improve life out there."

"There's some building going on, roads are being improved, as are major bridges, forts are popping up, patrols are spreading out, iy's just along major roads. That'll improve."

She nodded, "mostly between Tamber and Selnendrin proper, though there are leagues of roads that are barely more than wagon ruts. It will take years to rebuild them. One thing I would like to do is to speak with those who have chosen to live in the frontier to find out what they would find most useful."

"I am not sure that I would get as much information as scouts would. I could have them bring a gift from me, but most people are uncomfortable speaking with me. I think it would be better to assign people to complete that task. Even the Dukes and Duchess in the province would be happier if I didn't visit them, though I still plan to do so" she shrugged.

Roads and villages," he replied. "The farms and holdings are like islands in the sea, pretty much isolated. So villages within a day or two with markets and other things would be quite significant to them."

"Villages? I thought most moved out here to get away from civilization" she said, "though, I can see the need for market places. I am not sure about actual villages though. Those would require security and government structures. But, perhaps rotating markets" she suggested.

"Villages provide education, books, hospitals and other thing besides government," Oldwine replied. "From villages you can send out wagons with surgeons and books and other needs to visit the remote places, from the villages. You can put outfitters in some, and people can order things they need. We're here to bring a better life to the people out here, that would go a long way toward doing it."

"I was also considering traveling library wagons, they could bring books to farmsteads and rotate them around to each of them. We could even do something similar with surgeons and nurses, perhaps holding first aid lessons that could help save lives. Additionally, we could invite traders back into the frontier, fix it men, story tellers" she shrugged, "bring some variety and life into the wilds" she added.

"The last of the truly large raiding groups found a battalion of engineers building roads, and thought them to be easy meat," Oldwine chuckled. "Much to their surprise, the engineers can be a bit savage. Larger groups are breaking up and disbursing, they're too easy to hunt, and that makes them very nervous. Many are shifting to raiding in Gamedian, but they're finding there's no slave markets, and losing reason to raid, other than food and valuables, which are harder to shift."

"But even smaller groups can be dangerous to those in the frontier who do not have any forces near them" she added, "whether it is food, people or valuables they still kill for their plunder" she sighed.

"Agreed," he smiled. "Which is why there'll be many more patrols, as soon as I can stand up companies and corps and forts," he rose. "But, it is time for us to go," he helped Tamalyn to her feet. "Why don't you ride back with me, we'll talk a bit more." And after they'd stepped into the coach, he unfastened his jack and Breecher tugged his shirt out in the back and retried a small bag. Indra looked interested but said nothing. Oldwine opened the small pouch and drew out a large leather cylinder and opened it and drew out several tightly rolled maps. "The defenses, ports, forts, palaces and cities of Balisere," he smiled as he looked them over carefully.

Inside the restaurant Tamalyn hadn't commented on Balisere to much, at least not about Oldwine possibly going. She sighed, "so, it isn't just some of the frontier forces cooing" she said questioning. "You plan to go yourself" she glanced at Breecher, "and you as well?"

"No," Oldwine replied. "That is a battle for others. I knew that this intelligence was going to be delivered, but not where or when, we're the closes to Balisere for the Realm, so that makes sense, as does my hosting the planning staff for the attack. At most, I'll be sending the raiding marines."
