"Aw, you gotta be shittin' me!" Shalinda grumbled as she rolled to one side.  As she came clear of the massive club she rolled to her feet and lifted her arm to empty the remaining five shots on her bow into the ogre's face.  Once it clicked empty she was moving again, trying to get around behind it, ever mindful of that club and the empty fist, either of which could easily back hand her over the rail, if the impact didn't kill her outright.

Its roared and waved its arm to brush away the bolts lodged in the bones of its face.  But they something odd happened.  A huge sound.. sort of a "AAAHHWEEEHOOHOOSHIIIIITE!" and Weird Pete, on the end of a rope smashed into the big bastard as it pun and flailed.  He was naked as the dat he was born and his naked groin smashed into the back of the ogre's head and ran its face into the mast, driving the bolts in to a fatal depth.  Pete fell back and swung back to the Rose, by the rope now tangled around his knee, tailing a huge geyser of vomit and screaming of damage to his poor cods.

The ogres partner looked around the mast and leered at Shalinda with an evil grin and a hand cupping his own bits through his baggy kilt, an axe clutched in its large grimy fist.

The nice thing about being the captain of her own ship, was that Shalinda had all manner of money to spend, and all manner of places to spend it in.  Including places that were well known for their custom weaponry creations.  As Shalinda rose to her full height across from the other ogre, a twist of her wrist sent the empty clip on her handbow clattering to the deck.  She then patted herself on the thigh where the other container of bolts laid, and with a click, she was fully loaded again.  A downward jerk of her hand cocked the bow, and when she lifted it again, she was ready to shoot once more.

"Ye aughta work more on yer conversation skills," she grinned back wickedly, and loosed a rapid volley into the space formerly occupied by his hand.

There was a gasping sound followed by rude animal noises as it folded up into the fetal position on the deck before her.  Boggs was behind her, facing away and swinging a wide swath with his axe, and nothing seemed to want to come near him, and the sight of two ogres dropping near Shalinda gave her a fearful reputation among the enemy crew.

The archers were sweeping the quarter deck now and Lue was leading the last of the boarders over, leaving Shalinda to contemplate the fate of the ogre with a little breathing space.

She relieved the foul beast of his head with surprising ease, and booted the thing away from her with a grimace before stepping away from the growing pool of blood.  A quick look around showed that the fight was already almost won, and she danced among those who still stood against her marines, slicing blades and severing limbs as the fancy took her.

There was a strange new ritual, as she danced though she felt a dozen or so swats across her stern but every time she looked to see who it was everyone around her was busy.  Finally the last of the fighting crew was down and the few remaining prisoners were crowded on the aft deck begging mercy.

She could be a right mean little monster, but she was also fair to those who surrendered and asked for mercy.  The fact that they didn't sail under an immediately recognizable flag also helped their case.

She looked them over while running a cloth over her blade to clean it.  A general mix of scared and desperate, which would make her life easier.  "Ye've got two options, lads," she spoke slowly, looking at each meaningfully.  "One.  I put ye lot in me brig and I hand ye off to th' Palatine to deal with.  Two.  I put ye in a long boat an' leave ye."  The blade hummed softly as she passed the cloth over it once more, and then slid it home at her side.  "One of th' two guarantees ye food n' water.  And if I were a bettin' kind, I'd take me chances with th' Palatine over th' sea..."

They chose the long boat, Loren raised an eyebrow but pointed out that with good men on the oars they could make it in half a day.  "Dump 'em in th'launch and go fer th' prize?"

Shalinda grinned wickedly as she turned away from the huddled masses to Loren.  "I never said they got oars, too..."  She patted him on the arm and turned to take a tour of the captain's quarters.  "I leave ye ta see to it!" she called back over her shoulder with a small backhand wave

The captains quarters of the fighting ship smelled of feet, mildew and spilled chamber pot.  Obviously the subtleties of hygiene were lost on this bunch.  There were a few charts that showed local coasts and waters and the captain's bed was a large chest sporting a massive lock.

Shalinda made a disgusted sound in the back of her throat, and actually had to pause to adjust to the stink before she moved in with a scowl and limited herself to short breaths.  The charts were of course bundled up and sent back to the Rose.  She took a few minutes looking for the common hidey-holes, and even a number of the uncommon ones before turning to the chest.  She hefted the smelly mattress off the chest, and bent to inspect the chest more closely.

Plain wood wrapped in iron band, sound construction that might last longer than the ship that carried it.  The lock looked like an upside dow U connected to a large barrel, with an unusual-shaped keyhole.

Shalinda fiddled with the lock for a little while, looking it over.  While the recent work her new sword did to the other blade gave her ideas, she was hesitant to do something so painfully harmful to a blade, even if it was incredible craftsmanship.  She'd never forgive herself if she put so much as a nick in it.  She sighed heavily and strode back out onto the deck, looking around at the bodies briefly.  "Where's the captain's body?"

"Only body we kin see that's a cap'n's is yorn," one of the crew shouted.

"Yarr!" came many agreeing voices.

"All dressed 'bout alike," Boggs waved for the rest to shut up.  "What're be we lookin' fer?"

"A key," she shot a dirty look at one of the chorus voices.  "Damned shite can't spend half a penny on soap, but he's managed to find himself a nice chest and a clever lock."  She cast another look at the bodies, then sighed and shook her head.  "Alright, git Pete down here.  I ain't wastin' time searchin' through pockets."

Pete came over a few minutes later, wearing an improvised covering that looked lit a furry codpiece with a but of string lost in the hairy crack of his butt.  He was head to toe hair and stared at the lock for a moment befire starting to work with a few tools, his bulk blocking his work from view.  "Clever lock," he stood too quickly and his covering dropped off and all eyes turned in different directions.

"Pete!  Pants!  Now!" Boggs shouted.

"Don't need 'em," he shrugged and dropped the lock in Shalinda's hands and ambled off to his comfy crow's nest.

"Reckon its rigged?" Boggs turned his attention to the chest.

She stared at the chest for a moment.  A lock like that would keep most pickers out, and she doubted any of the former crew were as handy as Pete with their tools.  But a man didn't use a lock like that unless he really wanted folk kept out.

"No," she finally drawled out, "but treat it like it is.  There's no telling how 'is mind was workin' under all those fleas."

Boggs worked slow and careful and looked back at her.  "Two wires," he said at last.  "Lackwits reckoned I'd quit looking after th' first.  I've pinned them both," he opened it carefully to show a dozen swords very similar to the greatsword in style.  Boggs disabled the traps but did not touch the blades, each carefilly laid in their own spots.  "Th' edge is left plain, they' bein' saved fer a purpose.  Magic-like plans fer 'em I'm reckonin'."

She looked them over from behind his shoulder.  They were too large for her body, so no point in hefting one out, but she could tell their general value well enough without handling one.  "Bring 'em over.  They'll be worth somethin' ta someone.  Good work," she nodded briefly, and then left the cabin to get some fresh air.

"Chest 'n all lads," Boggs said.  "this jest ain't right."

On deck Lue was seeing the old crew off into their boat, then let them watch as he dropped their bundled oars over the side, a few hands reached for them when he droopped over an anvil ties to the end of the rope and the oars went under.  "Work fer it," he said and turned around.  "This bucket ain't worth savin," he said to Shalinda.  "Lets put 'er t' th' torch and catch th' prize an' shift th' cargo."

"That goes without saying," she practically sneered, and made a show of trying to not sniff herself.  "Bloody hells, I'll hae to burn all this jus' t' get the stink out."  She shook out her jacket, purposefully wafting it his way with a playful gleam in her eye.  There wasn't much else for her to do over here, so she made her way back to the Rose to wait for the crew to finish scavenging what was worth taking.

"Smells like ye save'd em from dyin' o' th' pox from their own filth," Loren fanned his hand under his nose.  "Ye could hae swum back at least." His eyes twinkled as he teased her.  The crew returned as the flames spread slowly over the deck and they burst up the mast when they were close to half of a mle away.  The prize crew already had the hatch covers off and were sorting the cargo by value before they arrived.  Fine porcelain dishes, gold and silver utensils, bolts of expensive silk, bottles of the finest wines and brandies that any of them had seen.

"Raider's I'd reckon," Boggs reported.  "Robbed rich houses.  Least they didn't steal no women, that's ne'er pretty.  Pretty haul here though."

Shalinda gave a low whistle as she held one of the bottles in her hand.  Selling something like this could make a poor man rich for a short time.  Or a rich woman richer and a happy crew happier.  She'd already sent her jacket off to be laundered, and stood on the deck in her blouse with the sleeves rolled up.  "Stolen folk means a quicker return ta shore, too," she murmured mostly to herself, and handed off the bottle to Weedie to be added to her collection.  "Though if'n this keeps up, we'll nae make it ta Walderburg before we have to turn back to unload," she grinned.

"Good start," Loren agreed, "makin good time unloadin' what's worth keepin' too, we'll need tae get off'n this shore soon as we do.  Got extry eyes aloft.  We'll be under weigh before sunset.  Rich pickins fer a coaster too, we don't want tae unload this lot local, might swing fer it if we try."

If was an obvious course of action, but good to know her sailing master agreed.  "We'll touch in at Porane, see what we can't get rid of before we make the crossing.  Give the lads a bit of time on land before we get back to a whole lotta nuthin'," she grinned.  "I'd rather have solid gold and good supplies in my hull than fragile porcelain and silver that's only good for eating with."
