Raw Winter
« on: December 15, 2009, 06:55:08 PM »
It's snowing outside again.

I wonder if it's going to stop.

Juron's been complaining that it's too cold.

She's always complaining.

"Hey Juron!  You sorted that leakage yet?"

"Just about!"

I'm glad to be wearing mittins. With the snow falling outside, it would be a cold job to do. Mikhail's always making me do the jobs he deems 'under him' if I'm around.

"I'm just about... done!"

Sticking another staple into the fabric, I jump down off my ladder, rubbing my fingers together. Even safely inside, the chill from outside bothers me. He mocked me last time I made a comment about the cold, I heard him when I walked away. Sometimes I could smack him.

I inspect the damage.

Not the best of repairs, but it'll do for now.

I got my hands wrapped round a flask of coffee.  My breath's forming clouds.

"You're going outside to pick up the supply drop."

This news doesn't surprise me. Hands on hips, I glare at the man standing before my handiwork.

"You've got to be kidding me. Why don't you go out and get it for once. Seems like you don't mind the cold so much."

Taking the coffee from his grasp, I take a long sip, before pointing towards the door.

"Go on, I'm not your Mama. You're a big boy."

I snatch the flask back from her clutches.

"I'm in command here!  I say something, you do it.  Did I say I was going out?  No.  Now get your coat on and bring back that supply box before I throw you outside and lock all the doors."

With a poute, I stalk off to grab my jacket. He would too. He'd pick me up and throw me outside. Wait until the very last minute before he let me back inside. Even if I did go out and get the stupid box. I wouldn't mind getting the box... if it was warmer. I do hate the cold.

Going outside, I close the door behind me. Already I can feel the chill and I want to get back inside as fast as I can. Stupid Mikhail, too chicken to do it himself. Why couldn't they drop the box off closer to the station? Instead of making it so there was a bit of a treck, through the snow to get to it. I could see it off in the distance. Grumbling, I headed towards it with a sigh.

Good.  She always gives up when it comes to arguments.  I watch her through the window, then turn away as the snow hides her.

^

As Juron walks outside, the ground comes alive.  A white jumpsuit grabs her quick, and pulls her in to the thick snow.

A glove covers her mouth, a gun is in her face.  There's a man with a pair of goggles staring back at her.

"How many men inside?"

I nearly scream, but the gloved hand covers my face. Staring at the gun, I suck in a deep breath. My heart always seems to pick up when I'm startled, a little scared.

How many men? I wonder if I should lie... will it make them decide against going in? I glance around. I don't see anyone else. But that doesn't mean anything. I didn't even see him. If I say one, maybe he'll go in alone. I don't want a group to go in after Mikhail. But if it's just him.. and I say a lot...

I raise a finger, indicating one.

The man frowns.

He doesn't know if she's telling the truth or lying to him.

But right now, she's got a handgun to her face.  She must be nearly wetting herself.

Under the goggles is a thick, overgrown beard.  It's glittered with white.

With a Scottish accent, he speaks perfect Norwegian.  Two more bodies begin to tremble in the snow.

"You better not be lying."

A tight feeling grips my stomach, upon seeing these new quivering bodies appear. I want to do something to at least give him some sort of warning. I haven't seen him sport a weapon on his body for the last few days, simply because it seemed like he saw there to be no point.

There's hardly anything I can do. It's hardly windy, so if I screamed... he would hear it. Biting the hand infront of me, the gun doesn't matter at this moment. Pulling the hand from my mouth, I let out a scream, and push myself away.

Her attacker grunts and withdraws his hand.

She tries to get away, but she's not quick enough.

The foreigner smashes his hand against her face and climbs on top of her to keep the woman under control.

It's not long before tape is placed over her mouth, and he's tying up her hands behind her.

The snow was never a good help, when just trying to run, let alone away from anyone or anything. I knew that. But it didn't stop me from trying. It was a terrible failed attempt and in no time, I found the snow closer to me than before, a hurting face, and my attacker ontop.

There was a struggle, but it did no good on my behalf. I couldn't get any sort of upper hand, even a hand free. My face hurt, and it felt like there was blood on my chin. With a sigh, I gave up. There was no point. I was never good at getting out of these situations like Mikhail. And there was no way, I could do it now.

He wonders if the man inside has heard the scream yet, and has come out to investigate.

There's no one else out here.  Perhaps the growing storm has supressed her voice.

He picks her up and prods her forward with the tip of the weapon, hiding himself behind her.

"Keep walking, don't try anything stupid, and maybe you'll walk away from this.  Guess you better hope that if your partner tries to shoot, he's a good shot."

I could run. Again. At least try to. But chances are by now, he's going to shoot me. Whoever -he- is. I wasn't even completely aware that anyone knew we were out here. Obviously someone did. This was all his fault. Sending me out here like that. Something bad always happens sooner or later. It's like I'm a magnet.
I don't like the feeling of the weapon being pressed into my back. Even through my jacket it feels cold.
There's really nothing I can do. Just head forward, and hope that nothing terrible happens.
Sigh..

I watch it all from the window, I got the old hunting rifle in my hands.  I bet it hasn't been used since the nostalgic days of World War Two, at least it's got some bullets in the magazine.  Enough to take down any of these guys.

There's four of them coming towards me.  The snow's falling thicker so there's no way to tell if any of them is actually Juron.  I lift the rifle and aim.  But I give them a warning first.

"Stay back!  I have a gun!"

The man behind Juron tells her to keep walking, while the three of them carefully dive in to the snow without being seen.  No matter where she looks, the young Norwegian woman has a gun pointing from every direction.  She's forced to defy her partner's warning...

My legs are trembling, it takes an effort to not just collapse into the snow. I hate this game. At least he knows that we're coming. There really is no other option, but to continue forward. I'm going to get shot, I know it. Some way or another. From my own partner, or one of the goons behind me.

Fingers clenched tightly I continue, waiting for the sound of a trigger being pulled from either infront, or behind.

There's silence.  Nothing but the faint crunching of Juron's boots stamping in to the snow below her.

We're all waiting.  I'm ready to fire.  The leader of the group has his sights on Juron, while the other two are patiently waiting for a spark from the rifle to give away the Russian's position.

Nothing.

She's still moving.

I've had enough.

I fire at Juron.

A shot is fired back.

The bullet's been fired. Without thinking, I throw myself to the ground. A terrible pain hits my side and I put my hand to it. Another one goes off, closer to me and I can't help but scream behind the tape. Why do they always seem to have duct tape available?

Looking through the heavy falling snow, I try to see Mikhail. Was he shot?

Pulling the duct tape from my mouth, I pick myself up off the ground, at this moment, I don't care about the danger nearby. I can't help but worry about Mikhail.

"Mikhail!... Mikhail!!"

There's no reply.

I don't call.  I don't shout.

Satisfied that their work is done, the three men return to their feet and grab Juron.  They're not interested if she's hurt in the process.

"Wilkins, Anderson.  Make sure he's dead."

They don't take long.

"He's dead."

My lower lip is trembling, I can't stop it. I can feel the tears leaking from my eyes.

He's dead. That's what they said. Two words. Two simple words.

It can't be... but I can't help but believe it. He wouldn't have known where they were.

My partner...

Dead.

I want to run to him, to clarify for myself what those two men said to be true. I tug, I want to go forward.

My mind is becoming a cage of chaos. No thought is working anymore.

Dead...

"Let me see..." It's hardly a whisper. I didn't even realize I spoke until it happened. The wind has picked up, I doubt they heard me.

Who are these men? I don't care... I have to see.

"Mikhail..." I tug away, the pain in my side nothing but a background feeling. "I have to see!"

The leader of the group gives her one final wish, leading her to the wreckage of her partner.

His face is unrecognisable, an impressive shot from the marksman.  The other two get to work.

Explosives are planted around the weather station.  Soon, it will be a flaming grave.

"Charges are set.  What we doing with her?"

"We're leaving her here.  There ain't another soul for miles.  The cold'll get her."

The rifle is snatched from my loose grip.  Their job is complete.  The explosives tick away slowly.

The men are gone.  It's just you and me.

Wish I could have told you it was fun.

My fingers touched his face gently. Blood was everywhere. His eyes... those eyes...

Trembling fingers moved over his eyelids, closing them. I didn't want to believe it. But he looked it.

I could hear the sobs coming from me, but I couldn't feel the tears. I had forgotten about the cold, about the men.

Putting my ear to his chest I wished to hear the sound of a heartbeat. I wanted to. I needed to. But there didn't seem to be anything.

Taking snow, I cleaned his face. Gently. There was so much blood. There was nothing I could do. There was really no point to try. But I couldn't help it.

Blood wiped away, I pushed the hair from his face. He looked a little better now. For a dead man. I let out a laugh, a smile through the tears. He wouldn't care. But I did. Even in the end.
