Questions Under a Neon Light
« on: November 18, 2009, 04:45:19 PM »
An Alternate 1980
There's a prison somewhere in Eastern Europe.  The location is unknown, the residents are blind to what country it is in, let alone city.  It is run by a man known only as Kommandant Szymanski, a military officer of Polish descent.  Every few weeks, he will walk the narrow corridor between the prison cells to check on how things are being run, if the prison guards are worth their wage and the security is as tight as ever.  Some of the inmates have rather notorious backgrounds, and some have achieved a sickening celebrity status amongst the other prisoners.

Take Adalinda Knapp, for instance.  She is one of the most dangerous criminals under his roof.  It took them years to track the woman down and grab her, it wasn't easy and many good men were lost because of it.  The German authorities requested she be sent to Szymanski's underground prison in hopes that certain information she possesses be extracted as quickly as possible.  That, unfortunately, hasn't happened.  She is the only person that knows the whereabouts of her boss -- and suspected lover -- Dietrich Schneider.  And right now, Adalinda holds all of the cards.

The guards are frightened to touch her, to displease her in anyway.  It frustrates Szymanski to no end that she is treated like a princess around here.  Although strict rules remain in place, and her freedom is limited, she knows she is able to do anything without proper consequences.  Today, Szymanski has pulled in the very man that snatched her.  The Kommandant had no idea exactly how the man managed it, but Mikhail Kirechenko -- some Russian detective -- had thrown her right in to the lap of Szymanski.  Everything was set up.  The tiny interrogation room could barely fit the two chairs and table which usually occupied it, however one chair was missing today.  While the Russian Kirechenko sat on one side of the table, Adalinda had been wheeled in to sit at the other, strapped to a wheelchair without any possiblity of escape.  On her upper body was a filthy straitjacket which kept her hands away from any objects she could use to attack.  Mikhail on the other hand wore a dodgy looking red checked shirt underneath a thick parka jacket.

The interrogation room was three floors below the main prison block, burrowed deep underground.  The only access to the room came in the form of a freight elevator on the wall behind Adalinda.  It was manually controlled from above, meaning the pair were trapped down here.  The metre-long neon light on the ceiling gave off a green-coloured tint, Mikhail leaned back in his chair and smiled.  "Didn't realise they'd declared you insane, Adalinda."

Adalinda's lips curved into a small, amused smile at Mikhail Kirechenko's words. Her shoulders shrugged underneath the tight confinement of her straitjacket, and she looked down at her lap, crossing her legs at the knee before looking back up at the Russian man who sat across from her. "Is that what this is? They have decided I'm insane?" Her eyebrows raised a bit, before her eyes moved from the man infront of her, around the small room they sat in. "So, what are you doing here Mr. Kirechenko? Come to get your look fill on this little situation you've put me in? Come to try and... find out something I have yet to tell anyone else?" Ada's smile widened even more, a look not many could ever say they had seen. "You're wasting your time, my Russian boy. You're trying to play a game, that isn't meant for you."
Leaning forward, just a bit, Adalinda tilted her head up. "I've got an itch, do you mind?"

Shaking his head, Mikhail was tempted to give her a nice, full slap when she requested that he scratch an itch.  He knew what she was capable of, however.  That's why she was in this predicament.  Even the straitjacket would only keep her confined in this prison for so long, all it would take was for one guard to show his naivety and play in to her hands.  Mikhail had made sure that time and time again, she was given minimum contact but also put under heavily supervision.  Somehow, he knew that wasn't the case, and she was allowed to wander freely for most of the time.

Reaching down in to the bag beside his chair, Mikhail placed a couple of pieces of paper on the top of the table and placed a pair of thick-framed spectacles in front of his eyes, ignoring any insult that the German would might give him that they looked rather nerdy for someone like Mikhail.  "Well, I guess I may as well ask anyway.  God loves a tryer, after all."  Leaning forward -- still keeping his distance from the woman -- he blew some air in to her face.  "So where is he?  You tell me what I want to know, I might make you a little deal of my own."

Sitting back, Adalinda switched from one crossed leg, to the other, quirking a brow at the man who seemed to think he could so easily get, what he wanted. Easily.. perhaps not. Maybe he wasn't that dumb. But she could see the small faint look of hope that glinted in his eyes behind those ridiculous looking specticals sitting on his nose. Those stupid ugly things. Were his eyes that bad he needed to wear such atrocious things? "Mikhail, I wasn't aware that you needed glasses... is that what it takes for a woman to look good to you as well? I remember the company you used to keep..." Judging by his current reaction to things, she felt like leading into things a little more.... close to home for him. "Tell me Mikhail.. what sort of advantage do you think you have here? You want to know where Dietrich is? Do you know where your... partner is? Has been even? Should I give you a little briefing on the situation I'm sure you're not actually aware of?"
Adalinda smiled a bit, moving her foot a little. "I know you don't know. But that's okay. I know where she is. Just like I know where Dietrich is. And you, don't know either. So, tell me Mikhail... which would you rather know? The position of someone you have a connection with, or the man who could make you more than you are? I'm sure that's an easy answer isn't it... you seem like the type to throw yourself before your companion. You want to know where Dietrich is instead, don't you. I bet you do. You'd rather know that, and then you think that some how, later on you'll find out the other.... well Mikhail, I'll let you decide. Maybe I'll tell you if you ask me nicely.... which do you want to know?"

Mikhail hadn't spoken to, or even seen Vanessa in a little while.  He had naturally assumed that it was because of all of this.  Too dug in to his work to actually notice a lack of social life at the present moment.  But when Adalinda spoke of her disappearance, over her current location, the Russian just didn't know if he could believe her or not.  This was a dangerous woman he was talking to, and she had contacts all over the country.  But could she really have orchestrated something like abducting Vanessa?

"I don't believe you."  He replied, standing up and circling the table and chairs for a few turns.  "Where's Dietrich?"  He repeated again, trying to ignore everything about Vanessa.  But he had to make sure she was OK, and Mikhail suddenly had the urge to make a very important phone call.  Damn it, he thought.  Adalinda had got to him.  Even if this was just a stupid lie to try and provoke a reaction out of her, she could at least smile at the fact he hurried off out of the room and disappeared for ten minutes.  Upstairs, Mikhail was desperately trying to contact Vanessa through the payphone, but there was no answer.  Again, and again, he listened to the constant ringing, and nothing came of it.

When he returned, the Russian slammed a small revolver on to the table in front of Adalinda.  It was empty.  For now.  "You're going to tell me where they both are.  I'll ask five times -- and every time I don't hear the right answer, we're going to put a bullet in that gun."

She just sat there quietly, watching him. He didn't believe her? Adalinda watched as he paced back and forth, circling. She waited. He asked the same question again, but Ada never replied. She just sat there, in her little wheelchair, tucked snugly into the straitjacket watching as what she had said, began to slowly eat away at Mikhails thoughts. She knew that it would get to him. That he was thinking about it, questioning what she said, trying to come up with a logical explenation.
It was enjoyable, watching the Russian man try and figure things out on his own, all in his little mind that was probably beginning to panic. Adalinda waited, for the moment it finally won over, and watched as he hurried back out of the room. She didn't turn her head to watch him leave, just sat there, a smirk spreading across her face. It was always fun, when things went the way she wanted them to be. Planting that little seed in was the most enjoyable thing she had done today.
Waiting the ten minutes for him to return, Adalinda amused herself with humming a little tune. Hearing the elevator make it's jolly way back down, she brought the humming to a stop, and watched Mikhail as he came back around infront, and slammed the revolver down. An amused look touched the corner of her eyes as she watched it. "Couldn't get a hold of her? Hmm, I wonder why. You believe me now Mikhail? I sure do hope so."
Adalinda sighed, "you're really going to shoot me? Is that your response to everything when it doesn't go your way? You put a bullet into whatever isn't cooperating to your liking? Go ahead then. Shoot me. With all five bullets you're threatening me with... threatening. What a silly threat. You think your bullets will make me talk? Do you remember, who you're speaking to young man? What do you think those bullets will achieve? You'll never get me to talk, putting those into me. Infact, knowing you, in the end, you'll just be left frustrated, and with no way of knowing where Dietrich, or Vanessa are."

He knew she was enjoying herself, sitting there in that chair with her own arms cuddling her stomach like a protective seal.  Sitting with her legs crossed, dangling those heels forward, showing her power she had in this place.  Standard dress code meant her ballet boots were not legal footwear, but she somehow got her way along with other things that she was given access to.  Picking up the silver revolver, Mikhail opened up the bullet chamber and showed her that presently, it was empty.  That soon changed when the first bullet was slid in to the circular gap.  The men watching this conversation through the CCTV would have no way of preventing what was about to happen.  Mikhail knew that if he killed her, then there'd be no finding Vanessa, and no finding Dietrich.  But she had pushed him over the edge.

"But Adalinda... I bet you've never experienced true pain before.  How about a piece of cheap lead in to your knee, huh?  You'd be in that wheelchair permanently if I did that.  We can do it that way, or test your luck and spin the chamber to see where it lands.  A little roulette."  Pushing the wheelchair away from the table, Mikhail climbed on to her lap -- his legs on either side of the surprisingly narrow chair-with-wheels.  It was a strange closeness that the two shared, almost romantic if the pair weren't such enemies to one another.  Tilting Adalinda's face to the side, Mikhail had the nose of the revolver under her chin -- stratching that imaginery itch she teased him with earlier -- and whispered in to her ear:  "Where's Vanessa and Dietrich?"
