Cashtober: An exercise in spending control
« on: September 29, 2009, 11:28:53 AM »
This year, I've decided to take up the challenge of my local radio DJ's and turn October into Cashtober.  For a whole month, I will use only cash for my purchases - NO credit or debit.  (Now, you're allowed to keep the card for those expensive emergencies, like if your car breaks down or the water pipes explode, etc).

I'm fairly good about my spending (at least I'd like to think so), but I know I can cut back.  And in these times, we all can do with saving a little money.

So here's my challenge to the rest of you:  Join me in Cashtober!  The more of us who do it together, who can share our experiences and keep each other accountable and responsible, the more successful we'll be!  Here's the deal:

Set a budget!  Set aside a given amount of money for each week that will include any money you need for gas, groceries, bills, etc.  I'm going to start at $100, and see how I do.  The idea is that you only take out that much money, and then you don't get any more until the next week.  Rather than paying your bills online, drive to the power station or wherever and pay it in person.  Granted, some things you just can't pay in person, for whatever reason.  For instance, my landlord lives in another town, so I have to mail a check (I'm not sending several hundred dollars in cash through the mail!  That's just dumb!).  But for everything else, I'm sticking to cash.

It's fact that when you have to count out and hand over cash, you're more aware of the money that's going out than if you swipe a piece of plastic, even if you diligently track your expenses.

I'm looking forward to how everyone does with this!

You can't hand me cash, handing me cash is to say spend this we don't need it.  I'm way more careful with my debit card.

We're (me and my husband) giving it a try, we'll see how we do.  With the way we handled last month (though I'd like to point out we were/are $600 short of what we were supposed to have, through absolutely no fault of our own), it'll be a good exercise.  And we'll hopefully keep it up longer.  My aunt and uncle used an envelope system; put a certain amount of money in the envelopes for things; food, gas, entertainment, etc.  If the envelope was empty, oh well.  You were out.  So we'll see.

I saw that somewhere else, too.  Seems like a good idea.

Ok, here's my rules:  For monthly bills, which never change (by much), and for medical (god forbid I need it), I'm allowed to use checks and my online bill pay, because there is no way I can get around paying those.  But for everything else (gas, entertainment, food), it's cash.  Here we go!

Our rules: CASH.  Thank you.  We pay rent with a check, and all automatic/long distance bills are through the debit card, but there are a few we can pay in cash, so those we have.  So far it's not bad.  It's actually kinda interesting, to see where our money gets spent every month.

So far, I'm not actually seeing much of a difference in spending habits.  I mean, really, I just pay bills, lol.  Will be interesting when it's time to go grocery shopping though...

I used to pay everything with cash. I went to the bank every payday and got money orders to mail off for bills. I also got out the money to buy groceries and such forth. It is time consuming to say the least.
There were many times when I had to borrow money from friends to purchase little things. Not because I was broke, but because I had no cash and had no way to get more cash. (No ATM card)
I like your idea. But, I know that for me there isn't any accountablity. I use the program Money, and every debit and credit transaction is recorded. Money then gives me a break down of what was spent where.
For example, I discovered yesterday that during the month of September we spent a fortune on groceries! The worst part is, we didn't seem to have any groceries. The reason why we spent extra is simple. We never went to the store for a big grocery run and instead spent a little here and a lot there. Because I have every transaction recorded I saw the pattern and this month will take counter measures to make sure it doesn't happen again.
I wouldn't of even known it was an issue if we had spent cash.
I wish you luck with Cashtober, but do yourselves a favor and also keep a ledger of what you spent where and for what reason. That way you can better track exactly where all your cash went. : )

I have Quicken, the only problem is that I'm about as good at keeping current with that as I am at keeping a regular diary (I don't, lol).  I think the last time I reconciled it with my bank statements was back in April...

I'm trying!  I'm just generally failing...  lol
