Making the 4th edition leap...
« on: February 21, 2009, 02:48:30 PM »
I'm finally updating my game, I play a very homebrewed AD&D system based on 1st edition but with things added in from 2nd, 3rd, 3.6 and d20 thrown in for good measure.  One of the problems with this is if somebody shows me a character class they like and I'll allow, I have to tweak it almost inside out to make it fit.  So, its time to bring things back toward a single consolidated system.  Don't get me wrong, there will be tweaks still, but I actually broke down and done something I haven't done since the early 80's, I bought the core books.  Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual.

Now its time to read and see what will have to be tweaked, for example I don't have some of the standard races in my world, Dragonborn for example, and in my world there are new races like Camden and Aldoran and you can play ogre and half-ogre characters.  I also need to update my monsters to 4e and trim out some of theirs.  So, I'll be busy while I do that and figure out the intricacies of the new system.

My first irritation with 4e AD&D, they held back some character classes, such as monk, druid and barbarian.  I have a modified monk class that I need to update and use druids and barbarians extensively and now they want me to buy the Platers Handbook II in march when its released, and now they say that Psionics may not be out until PHBIII.  Listen up!  Give me the whole core game at once and don't expect me to shell out cash for stuff that I should already have with the base set I bought.  Its like buying a car and having to wait for the tires to be released later.

Ha, don't get too attached to either (Vista or XP). Windows7 is rolling out by Christmas I believe. Beta is out and it's not too bad. Only the future can tell.

I actually prefer Vista to XP, but from what I've heard from some very independent reviews, Win7 leaves them both in the dust.

Yes, yes, I have Windows7. It has some new features and appears to catered toward making life easier for non-technology-oriented persons. While making life difficult for tech-oriented people as everything's been flopped around. All in all, it has the power and look of vista with the compatibility of XP.

Me and my guys are playing a 4th edition game here in Iraq, as well as several that we played back in the states. And I have to say that I HATE how it seems to have dumbed down everything. I loved how technical you could get in a good 3.5 game. MY old Minotaur Barbarian (Boze) was such a f**king bad ass, and had all the uber feats to make him a perfect tank. And you couls specialise in every class to do something very specific if you wanted to. You wanted someone who hid in the shadows waiting for the perfect chance to strike, then it was easy with the right skills and feats.

4th edition tries way too hard to level the playing feild so no one whines about 'His character gets more kills' or ' I can't hit anything with a swrod (when they are playing a mage)' etc, etc...

All in all, its a good game in and of itself. But when compared to 2nd edition and 3.5 edition, 4th just doesn't cut the snuff.

I just started learning 3.5, and I have the books.  I'm not upgrading, lol.

And any OS that is a pain for tech savy people is bullshit.  IMHO.

One of the complaints about win7 is that people who don't know much about computers pick it up faster than tech types, which I find interesting.

ADnD = Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.  I'm not sure what makes it different from DnD.  Computers was mostly my tangent, lol.  And now LP is just being random.

D&D is the old boxed set, it came with some rinky dink plastic dice and a crayon to color in the numbers and was a really cheesy watered down version of the game, for example Elf was a character class that did magic  :-\  my head exploded when I saw it.

I'll refrain from making such comments as: I thought elves had magic... or... why is that so strange? I don't want any head expolosions. It's messy.

I actually have my hands on a full and complete oriiginal box set for D&D. I thinks it's awesome to see how the game started back in the day.

But if it were up to me, I'd stay in the 3.5ed realm as well. Especially when the DM lets me play high level characters. I mean, yeah, its fun starting off low and then gaining levels, if any of my DMs would stick to a game long enough for me to get any good levels in. But I love the high level games where you start off with a character that can level a building if they want, or (like anothe Boze story) destroy the doorway between the 'real world' and an extra-dimensional space in the middle of a nymp village. That was f**king awesome. Not every day when a single Minotaur can level an entire village without even drawing his sword. I was pretty proud of myself.

Damn forest nymph wouldn't enchant my cresent blade with poison.... stupid bitches...
