"Well, gold star in our column," Izzy said before snagging another piece of bacon. "So what, our vigilante is trying to chop his way up the food chain?"

"Safest bet," he replied with a nod. "There may be a kill all the bad guys sort of vigilantism at work, or a specific group that pissed somebody off. I have people digging into their pasts now."

"Everyone hates the Russians, it's going to be a long list," Izzy said, finishing her third piece of bacon.

"Basically the entire population of Battle Ford and Tanner county, including the freaking Ruskies," He said as he passed over the news section to Izzy and flipped open the funnies. "Oh, don't let me forget that I ordered some match grade ammo, need to pick it up on the way out of town."

"Don't forget to get your ammo on the way home," she said as she scanned the articles. After a few minutes, she pulled out her phone and shot a text off to her boss with a brief update before returning to the paper. And more bacon.

When the time came they walked down to the car and made the trip to the court house. Security was a breeze, flash the badges, wait a moment while their credentials were run and then into the court room.

Delia Bates, the US Attorney looked at them oddly and then stared at Izzy. "Shouldn't you be sitting with us?"

"Why?" Rybak shrugged. "She's not part of the problem, you are."

Then the bailiff called the court to order and Rybak guided her to sit next to the county attorney.

"So, we have a jurisdiction complaint?" the Judge asked.

The county attorney started to rise but Rybak laid his hand over hers and came to his feet. "Yes, Your Honor," he rose as he spoke. "Detective Sergeant Alex Rybak, I'm lead investigator for the city and county."

"And you've passed the bar," he referred to his briefing sheet.

"Yes, Your Honor," he nodded. "Our federal friends breezed into town to start an investigation, which they've ignored to meddle in our other cases, to the point of setting off a boobytrap that destroyed evidence and are now here to try and explain why we should be prevented from doing our jobs."

"Objection!" Bates rose to her feet.

"Wait your turn," the Judge replied.

"Anyway," Rybak continued. "I understand the federal mentality, I was a federal agent of one form of another for several years, and turned down some pretty robust recruiting efforts by the agencies represented at the table over there. Fact of the matter is that I have more experience than any of them, and between Deputy Franks and myself, we have more real world experience than their entire team combined. They'll brag on their labs, but we have a very highly accredited lab at the University that teaches criminology and trains lab rats for law enforcement, some of those graduates work in their own labs in fact. We may be small town, but we're more experienced and more competent than anyone they've chosen to send out here, and we'd like them to stop interfering in our cases and to open the bottleneck on information they've somehow imposed that has kept us from identifying explosives used in a murder. They may claim security concerns, but before they do, I maintain a security clearance that allows me to investigate matters rising to the level of nuclear weapons as part of my reserve status with the US Army Inspector General. So, I suppose I'll let Ms Bates explain how the Feds are here to save us backwater rubes, but I think backwater or not, we've done a good job at keeping the peace, especially compared to places like DC, where they're headquartered."

He sat and looked at Izzy. "I miss anything?"

Years of practice helped Izzy keep a straight face. At Rybak's invitation, she nodded and rose. "A secondary strategy they may try to employ is to suggest we work as local consultants to them. I've done it myself. However, what they will not tell you is that this will further hobble our ability to do our job to the fullest extent as local experts. I've also seen the cost of that first hand. We cannot afford to take that chance here, Your Honor."

She tried to argue the points raised, but the judge kept referring to the combined resumes of Izzy and Rybak, then read the complaints brought in during the session from the governor, complaining about the ham-handed tactics of the federal agents in question. "So," the judge sat back. "Here's what's going to happen. We're going to leave the law enforcement to law enforcement, any involvement from the US Attorney, ATF, FBI or any other alphabet will be in an advisory status and to expedite information requests by the investigators. See that happens, and there won't need to be any contempt citations issued."

Any questions?"

Heads shook at the federal table.

"I asked a question in a clear and concise manner, and I require the answer to be given in the same manner."

"There are no questions," your honor, but we will have to take this up with our various supervision."

"Take up anything you want," he perused a document passes to him by the clerk, Wanda. "But the ruling has been made and filed. Get your copy before you leave."

The gavel rapped and the judge slipped out.

"What's your thoughts on disgustingly decadent burgers?" Rybak asked Izzy when the judge had left. "Know the best place in this town for it."

"Then I won't tell you that the root beer is homemade," he grinned. "And so is the ice cream if you want a float."

He looked over as they walked toward the door, "Ms Bates, if you want to learn enough to be any use here, burgers are this way. Welcome to Backwater 101, I assume you can follow us."

They walked down and hopped into the car. "Teasing her is too much fun."

Inside the little cafe he ordered six burgers with hand cut onion rings and root beer, then asked for a root beer float to go when they were done.

"That's it, you just say give you burgers and rings and don't ask what is on it or make changes?" Ms Bates asked.

"Exactly," he replied and looked at Izzy. "Never make it in a chow hall, or god forbid somebody tossed them a box nasty on a deployment flight."

"There's no terrorist chatter," Yancy Garwood of the FBI answered, her eyes intentionally not looking toward the US Attorney. "That tends to make it look like either a vigilante or a very small local cell. I'd lean toward vigilante."

"And it has to be a planner," Duane Farley of ATF added. "You don't just lay your hands if DOE explosives and a military aircraft gatling gun from your corner saturday night special dealer. So it may be a small cell of vigilantes.

"Like the old vigilance committees," Lin Tan of the FBI added. "This is the wild west after all, there's a history of that out here."

"We'll look at all of that," Rybak agreed as he finished his massive burger. "We already are actually. Small town, light population density in the county, so it's all a matter of looking and talking."

"No secrets in a small town," Ms Bates tried to maintain her relevance.

"Not if you're from that small town," Rybak replied. "Otherwise it's a sphinx, outsiders won't get far here. That's why we're pushing so hard, people will shut up nine ways from sunday for you, us they'll talk to." He looked at his watch and peeled off a few bills to pay for the meal. "Got a stop to make, then back to town and back to work." He took up his root beer float and nodded toward the door while looking at Izzy.

Izzy wiped the corner of her mouth and tossed the napkin on the table as she rose. "Thanks for joining us for lunch," she said with a saccarine smile, picking up her own float and following Rybak. "Spill that on the car, and you're paying to get her detailed," she said as they climbed into the car. "Where we goin'?"

"Down two blocks, hang a right and pull in by the red door." He sucked his float dry by the time they were parked and stepped out of the car before letting loose a low rumbling belch. "Carbonated water kills me, but it's so damn tasty." He grinned as they walked in. "Rudy," he greeted the man behind the counter. "Got my ammo?"

"Yes," Rudy rolled his eyes. "Even better, I got your payment." He set several boxes on the counter. "7.62 by 54, .338 Lapua Magnum and .50 BMG. Why the hell you need so many calibers?"

"The same reason your old lady needs so many vibrators, something for every job," he winked.

"No body has enough jobs to cover her collection," Rudy scoffed. "What about you, Lady, what you needin'?"

"Got SS190 Duty, SS197SR, that's the sporting round, heavier slug and muzzle energy and the SS197SP, you can get that because you're law enforcement, but it's a wimp." He indicated a case. "Got a couple of FN Five Sevens, choices are kind of limited, it's a decent round but it's not really a game changer. You have something else you want, I can order it."

"Have a couple of boxes," he shrugged. "LE only, but I'm not really a fan. It's okay if you're using a suppressor, quieter that way, it's a bit heavier, quieter, but it's slow, half the muzzle velocity, has about a third of the muzzle energy and a quarter of the effective range of most of the other rounds for that caliber.  Decent penetration though, pretty good wound cavity." He grinned and slapped the .45 colt at his hip. "But I'm spoiled by Old Slabsides," he grinned. "Grandpa carried him in WWII, Dad carried him in Korea, my uncle carried him in 'Nam and I carried him in Desert Storm," he shrugged. "Roscoe makes big holes and I can hit a small group with him out to around 75 yards before I need my glasses, and shooting Atomic Bonded Match Hollowpoints brings the hurt," he winked. "But, I'm kind of old school."

"Not with SB," he set them out and snorted slightly. "Bring that to me when you need to do the same thing at one-fifty, with grownup bullets," he winked.

"Cops don't usually need to hit at a hundred," Rybak smirked back. "If we do, we open the trunk."

"Got a new line on trauma plates," Rudy mentioned. "Better than what you have now. Hell, it's better than milspec."

Shoot me info," Rybak nodded. "I'll see what kind of funding we can get."

Rudy nodded and slipped a tiny canister to Izzy. "Just in case you need it, makes a can bear spray look like a pepper shaker by comparison. Flick the safety, point it, hold your breath and close your eyes when you hit the button, because that shit is just plain nasty."
