"The navy is having a hard time anyway," her father shrugged. "Ramon just retired the old admiral of the Navy and appointed Darian Amaris to replace him. The old guard now has to get used to a woman in command. I'm not going to say that whatever Taraborne did, they deserved it, he can be an obstinate sort, but usually, usually, in a good cause. He'll fight with a sword or a pen if he feels it necessary. Kilmaren will do you good service. Having him around may bring more Franchesca visits. She sort of feels like he's a little brother."

"Dors he consider her to be his sister?" Tamalyn asked him, "either way, she is always welcome. I have never yet refused anyone hospitality" she admitted, "I may not be excited to have certain people visit, but I have never refused them. As for Taraborne, he had words with a marine commander about him being so cautious that Taraborne lost men. After the confrontation, and just as he was finally ready to head upriver, the Admiral ordered him to return to his ship. Taraborne had almost seven thousand freed people in tight quarters, he declined the invitation" she shrugged, "and I can see his point. He can be disciplined after he gets those people out of danger, by his commander. I feel certain that Oldwine will be discussing the incident with him."

"He didn't punch the marine?" He grinned. "He's settling down as he gets older. I guilt the camps to hold up to twenty thousand, that'll leave a few thousand spots for the helpers as well. Malea's ships will be here in a few days, Taraborne's a week after. The helpers start arriving in the morning, along with tons of supplies."

"If he did, he didn't include that in his report. He did offer to meet him on the dueling field" she admitted, "he mentioned that. I will let Oldwine know where the camps are. We are going to send healers and physicians as well. Oldwine wants Taraborne healed as quickly as possible so he is spry enough to go see his new retrofitted flag ship in Delloram." She considerd "do you think he would agree to it if mother asked him to?"

"Put her in her uniform and send her down, I'm sure that most of his officers were cadets while she was commandant of the academy," he shrugged. "You can have her take his invitation to meet the Star again, Miranda should have the formal invitation to Oldwine any time now. His First officer will as well, based upon the report of his color sergeant to her."

Tamalyn smiled, she thought he just liked to see her in uniform, but didn't say it out loud. "I will do that. Papa, I am going to go see Lord Fowler and express my regrets about his daughter. She lost her leg when Admiral Durmand's ship sank. She held command until they were forced to scuttle the ship. Oldwine has informed him, but I feel the need to see him too."

She kissed her father, "thank you for building the camps. Have fun with your shenanigans"

Tamalyn took herself, and guards, to Duke Fowler's residence. After she was admitted to see him she said, "I wanted to come and express my sadness about your daughter's injury" she said with empathy evident in her tone.

"That is a comfort" she agreed with a nod. "I still felt the need to see you. I wish I was here under better circumstances. I would like to offer my assistance with a prosthetic leg for her. I have an artistic eye and can make one that looks like a real leg. You do not need to decide now, but I wanted you to be aware. She will need to be fully healed before I can fit it to her at any rate, so you, and she, will have time to consider it."

"I'll need to talk about her plans with her," he nodded. "Lord Ordant shared a dispatch from her surgeon, he is encouraged by her recovery so far, and she'll be coming straight here, she has already accepted command of the port that your father built here, she and the rest of her flotilla's wounded will come to recover, but I plan to steal her away and spoil her at home."

She smiled "you both deserve it. From the reports we received she continued to command even after her injury. I can not even imagine the fortitude required to remain conscious, much less keep her wits enough to give orders. I am not surprised in the least that she will accept the port commander position. She will never let her injury keep her down, she is a fighter to the core."

She smiled and nodded,  "I will not keep you any longer. Please do keep my offer in mind and discuss it with your daughter. And, do let me know if there is any other assistance I can help you with."

Tamalyn returned to Tamber City and her official office. She read through all her reports and answered her correspondence. Then she read through a book explaining the duties and responsibilities of the Frontier Governor.

She received a dispatch from Oldwine. "Have encountered several raft barricades, fought through all. Losses light, two 6th Rates constantly working the pumps and making field expedient repairs on hull damage below the waterline. Taraborn sends."

Tamalyn sent him a reply. 'Read and acknowledged, Tamalyn". She took her book and went to see Amrick, "we have approximately seven thousand freed prisoners headed our way. My father built camps along the river. And there are numerous groups from the realm coming to assist us in their transition. Is there anything specific that you think we should do to prepare for their arrival?"

"At first, they need to be able to eat, sleep, bathe, eliminate, and dress themselves, that is what we've made our first priority. We have everything for that ready in place, or being delivered. Oldwine plans to leave a brigade of five thousand at each camp for now, security and to let them see that our army is theirs as well." He paused. "Teachers and other needs are being brought in by the charities."

Tamalyn nodded, "you just gave me a wonderful idea. I think that I am going to see the wife's club and encourage them to hold a clothing drive. It would be a good way to build community spirit." She nodded still thinking about her plan, "I will go do that now, unless you would like to add any other suggestions."

She returned to her office, messaged Brock about tea, then wrote invitations to the commanders wives for tea. She sent them, tgen returned home to change for her guests.

"It would appear that there has been more fighting along the river," Brock passed her a dispatch to that effect.

Taraborne reported that they had broken through a legion-sized attacking force. Losses were light, as was ship damage. They would clear Gamedian and enter the Frontier late that night. Meanwhile, Malea Telbrantil-Meldresse had dropped off a cavalry brigade that was sweeping south into Gamedian and clearing the river. The ships had them in sight and they were operating together. Additionally, the ships that had carried the brigade, now carried the refugees, and the rickety collection of captured ships was abandoned to burn along the river's banks. Brigadier Hartin Chadnore VI and his cavalry would continue to screen them from the shore, and vigorously discourage any hostility aimed at Taraborne and his Flotilla.

To the west, reports indicated a much easier voyage. They had spotted enemy camps far from the river, that were duly harassed by their own cavalry screen. Captain Kilmaren, now in overall command, reported his belief that the forces along the river were concentrating for a large strike at Frontier Army bases along the border. He further concluded that the large number of small ships sent from the east to the western port that caused so much trouble were moved to make a raid very similar to the one Taraborne had planned, the Frontier Squadron had just beat them to it. He further reported that in total they now had nearly 12,000 being taken to freedom.

Between those that Malea, Kilmaren and Taraborne were bringing back, it was close to 26,000 to the two large encampments.

Tamalyn read the dispatch through, "and there are more refugees than we originally anticipated" she told him. "I am going to change and speak with Myrna, I will be down shortly."

Tamalyn went to her room an rang for Myrna then went to her closet and changed into a new outfit. "Myrna, I want you to find all of my oldest clothes from college and pack them up. The quality of them is still quite goid, but I haven't worn any of them in a long time and probably won't wear them again." She explained, "I am going to ask the wife's club to organize a clothing drive and I would like to add to it."

Tamalyn returned back downstairs, "if any other dispatches come in during mt tea, please deliver them. The ladies will understand" she added. "Is everything ready?"

"She would be a good choice. She used to do a lot of volunteer work in areas like that. That was a very good suggestion, especially since it would allow her to meet people in the province. And, the wife's club isn't nearly as pretentious as the last group she belonged to" Tamalyn nodded. "She will also be at the camp when they first arrive" she added, "out of curiosity, who suggested it?"
