"Speakin' o' dinner," Loren pointed to where Weedie was waving for her captain to come and eat.  "That gal is mighty diligent!"

Lue looked to to door and his stomach growled loudly.  "Jedda is broilin' a whole beef," Lue said thoughtfully.  "Fresh beef ain't nothin' t'let wait!"

"I'll send Wolf t'ye when yer plates come out."

Shalinda chuckled gently at Lue's expressed interest, and waved Loren off.  "Aye, I'll be waiting for him."  She led the way back to her cabin before Lue started to drool all over the deck, and before Weedie became even more insistent.  Seeing as it was a special occasion, she pulled out a bottle of wine from her special reserve; the bottle was older than she was, maybe even older than Lue, and she had it on good authority that it was a fine vintage.  The last supper before leaving shore, and the first supper back on board the Rose, seemed like a good enough excuse to indulge a little.

Lue finally pushed back his plate and reached for his wine.  "Jedda out-done herself," he sighed with great contentment.  "I'll remember this meal fer a time t'come."

Weedie came in and cleared off the plates and set a large piece of blackberry cobbler before them.  "She's tryin' t'fatten us up," he said and took a sponfull.  "Oh that's magic!"

Shalinda smiled and let a bite of the cobbler melt over her tongue.  She was going to miss meals like this when they were several months out to sea.  "Yer fat enough as is," she teased, and sipped at her wine.  "I'll let 'er know to set you on bread an' water for a bit."

She blushed over the rim of her glass, but smiled a little.  It was still a little awkward to hear comments and compliments, but she was getting used to them from Lue.  And it had certainly made things a little more...interesting...when it was just the two of them...  And there were certain things she could wear better now that really got his appreciation...  Speaking of, Thomas wasn't the only one who had secured a special delivery to her cabin, though that one she had already made sure was put away.  "You jus' keep your eyes to yourself," she scowled harmlessly at him.

He grinned, knowing he'd scored a point.  "They ain't left my head yet," he grinned,  "But they might if I wasn't holdin' on."  He winked when weedie came in and fetched away the last plates, Wolf rapped sharply on the door frame as Weedie ducked under his arm.

"Ye called cap'n?"

The next scowl directed at him did hold some small venom, but he was saved by the appearance of Weedie and Dargas.  "Aye," she shot another look at Lue before rising and beckoning the navigator to follow to her new chart table.  "I've just got some new charts, I wanted you to have a chance t' look them over before we set off," she explained as she pulled them out of the case and laid them out.

"Bald blue buggery badness!" Wolf stared at the charts and flipped through them.  "Th' problem with raidin' coaster is they kin go almost t'th' surf 'cause they know th' waters.  These'll let is chase'm and maybe run 'em ashore and take 'em beached.  And if we have t'run we kin plot tighter courses."  He continued to study them chart by chart.

Shalinda just grinned and leaned against the corner of the table, well enough out of his way.  "I thought ye'd be interested.  Anywhere in the world, an we'll know the coasts better'n most locals.  I'm thinkin' after we make them Wallies scared a' the sea, we go harass some Sea Tiger waters.  I still got bones that ain't been picked with them."  Of course, it would take them a good long time to finish with Waldenburg, so the southern pirates were safe from them.  For now.

He pointed to several spots where pirates and smugglers worked.  "There's where a couple o' th' buggers slipped away from us through th' reefs. Look, it was deep enough for us to have gave chase."

Shalinda pulled out a larger scale map showing the major shipping routes to cross reference the coastal and smuggling routes.  She'd seen a nice route to take when she'd first looked them over.  "I'd like to skirt this lane, here," she followed a line with a finger.  "The winds are better, takes merchants across faster, but less patrolled and known for pirates.  They'll expect desperate merchants making a run for it and betting their luck.  If we're just enough off course, they'll think us lost."  She grinned deviously.  "We'll teach 'em a thing or two about desperate."

Once they were done with the charts, she wrapped them up neat again and took another tour through the Rose.  This one was much more leisurely, and she checked in the hold and the infirmary, among other places.  She ended her walk in the galley to pester Jedda for a cup of coffee, and then moved herself to the aft most rail.  Shalinda spent a while just staring out across the harbor to the ocean beyond as the sun set.  It felt good to be aboard the Rose again.  Her fingers brushed over the rail lightly, refamiliarizing herself with an old friend.  She'd never deny her crew the chance to return to their homes and families on shore, but for her, the sea would always be home, and nothing made her more happy than the time when they lifted anchor.  Her suite on land had been no more than a few hundred feet from the docks, but now, back on the water, the air smelled more crisp and fresh; the regular lapping of the waves murmured a gentle song; and she felt tension ease from her shoulders and back.  By sunrise, they'd be on their way to adventure once more.  Shalinda smile, and sipped at her coffee.

The slipped their moorings before dawn and the longboat towed them out into open water before the sails and tide took over.  It was a fair wind and the Rose lifted her skirts and ran before it, seeming to nearly fly over the water.  Then they caught the trade winds along the coast and across the north until at last they entered the Koriche Straits between the major trading ports of Perenel and Koriche.

"Sail Ho" Pete caled down from the crow's nest.  "Sail off th' starb'r'd bow and one t'stern."

Loren was instantly at his glass and studying the one before them.  "Coaster, a lugger loaded w'goods.  See how low she rides?"

"Same sort t'stern," Lue observed.  Ridin' high an' fast.  Its clearin' fer action."

She took the glass from Loren and took a look for herself.  A predatory grin pulled at her lips, and she lowered the glass to look over her eager crew.  "Beat ta quarters!"  It was time to make sure they hadn't gotten rusty on shore.  "Bring us starboard to intercept.  We're about ta ruin some days."

A cheer rose up from the ship as she laid over for the turn, sails were trimmed briskly enough and showed their time in drills hadn't been wasted.  Soon they were close to the first ship.  A flaming lance passed across the bow and Loren raised his speaking horn.  "Heave to an' pr'pare t'be boarded!" He bellowed in a voice that could be heard for miles.  "Surrender an' take cargo, fight and yer scurvy carcasses fee th' fish!"

Armed men covered the decks of the lugger.

"Ain't bein' sociable, Cap'n.  Permission t' make our point?"

The engines were aimed and ready when Lue relayed the order to the engineers.  Bows and engines released, raining fire down onto the decks and sails.  Among the shots that streaked out were grappling hooks, strong arms drew the hooks tight as the engines continued their work, as the lines were fed to the capstans and strong backs bent over the bars and drew the ships closer together.

Fewer were available to prepare to receive borders and fight the fires that tried to spread, damage to the sails cut their speed and the ability to resist the pull of the capstans.  Then as the sides grew near Loren swatted Shalinda on the rump, I got th' Deck, Cap'n," he grinned.  "Away all boarders!" He roared.  And the marines flowed over the side and into the fight.

She shot him a dirty look, but grinned as her gaze turned to the ship next to them.  She joined the second wave of boarders, new blade in hand before her feet ever touched the deck.  It seemed a shame to actually use the beauty in battle, but she had no doubt that it would hold up better than any of the other pieces.

Her first swing cut through a cutlass as if it were made of wood, her second opened a man's ribcage and sliced his heart in two.  Around Shalinda, her crew drove the strickened ship's crew forward.  Those that weren't being felled by weapons were being driven into the sea. Boggs took several below to clean out the shirkers and hiders but inside of ten minuted of boarding they owned the ship.  "They were sendin' this one in wi' a prize crew only," he reported.  "The figitn' crew is comin' up from behind.  "I'll keep ten wi me and we'll make do t' get back out t' open water an' ye kin come get th' cargo.  Ye've still got one o' th' buggers t'deal with yet."

She cleaned her new blade on a body before resheathing it, and took a look at the following ship.  They were fools for letting their prize get so far ahead of them.

Shalinda rallied the boarding party with a sharp whistle and cut out ten from the group to remain before hustling the others back to the Rose.  "Bring us about," she shouted up to the bridge.  "Don' let 'em near the prize, I don't want it sunk before I can get at it!"

Loren put her about and they lined themselves up for a little chicken, a favored tactic of his, then again he always cheated a bit and drew them to the side he wanted them to with tiny course shifts.  Still, they bore in and the bow engines were maintaining their aim.  The rigging would go first, and Lue watched carefully for the point to release, finally he gave the order and fiery lances streaked out and shredded through the sails and even embedded in the foremast.  The men along the side were ready with hooks, the Rose was a much larger ship, and just her mass in passing would do a lot of damage when the time came.

More fire from the bow and the hits were telling, the liquid fire stuck to the sails, and they didn't we their sails as the Rose did.  Then they bit at Loren's feint and dodged at the last direction right into the massed bows and heavy crossbows of the Rose and the decks were soon covered with writhing men as the hooks sailed out and hooked the smaller ship, and drew her in close, the shock when the lines snapped tight threw men from their feet as their smaller ship jerked and the aft mast fell, dragged onto the main mast and knocking topmen and rigging askew.  Then the engines ripped them again.

"Lead on Cap'n," Loren laughed.  "They'll be after follering yer arse anywhere!"

"Keep it up an' I'll be draggin' ye by yer bits behind us on the way home!" she bellowed back at him, but she didn't waste too much of her ire on him when there was a fight to be had.  "Onward, lads, there's blood what ain't been spilled!"  Shalinda leaped onto the Rose's railing and put a barbed bolt through the throat of one of the sods still standing before she lead the charge over, her wicked blade once more cleaving bodies with ease.
