Return of the Rose of Tarmady
« on: September 05, 2011, 09:49:41 PM »
A long rest and refit of the Rose of Tarmady at the Sea Haven Shipyards no finds her ready for sea and with her captain looking toward the western seas.  Here the pirates of Waldenberg played cat and mouse with the navies that tried to stop them, here the prizes would be far richer and the thrill of the hunt even more intense.

"I'm seasick!"

Loren looked up to the masthead and saw the large bulk of their premier lookout overhanging the sides of the crow's nest.  "Yer in drydock ye addlepated sod!" the sailing master and first mate roared up at the fleshy spectacle.

"I'm landsick!"

"Belt up ye scurvy dog and hold on t' yer arse, we're about t' go back inta the briney deep!"

The ship then lurched and slid down the slipway and gracefully along the smooth surface of the water.  The ship heeled hard as a massive cable parted and allowed the rudder to heel over hard and the ship lurched hard, rocking wildly from starboard to port and back again, the ship coming to sixty degrees of athwartship roll once each way before slowly settling back into place.

"I'm airsick!"

"Get stuffed!" Loren roared and looked around the deck.  "Bosun, what are ye playin' at ye squid humpin' son o' a mongrel goat?  That rudder ever fails me again an' the old rum ye'll ever see agin'll pass through me first.  Ye have 'till dawn t' have this beautiful gal rigged fer sea."  He looked out at the setting sun then glanced over at Shalinda.  "Back on th' big water, Cap'n."

After 6 months, the Rose wasn't the only one ready to be back at sea.  Nor was she the only one who seemed to have undergone a complete refit.  Her captain stood by the helm, a tight grip and loose legs keeping her steady as the Rose returned to the water, and a grin tugged at the side of her lips.  Six months on land had seen the skinny girl turn into a woman, or at least a more womanly shape, which had given the seamstresses no end of joy, and Lue and Loren no end of grief.  Shalinda merely kept a full supply of blunted arrows in her handbows when she came by the ship during her growth spurt.  Three inches had been added to her height, and her hair was cropped close, though it was beginning to have some movement again after she cut off her dreadlocks.  About the only thing that hadn't changed about her was the sharp mischief in her eyes and that smirk.

"It's good to be home."  Her grin softened into a smile as she breathed deep of the sea air, somehow fresher now that they were actually in the water, and she looked over her crew as they moved about their duties.  "Bring 'er 'round to dock and we'll see how much of my money Jedda's spent this time."

"All ye let 'er," Loren grinned and pointed over to the pier.  The longboats towed them in and before long they were lashed to the massive cleats and the booms swung out and nets of cargo were soon coming over the rails.  They were halfway through the loading when Skeeter, the Bosun came up and knuckled his brow respectfully.

"One o' th' ol' chains parted a link," he looked apologetic.  "Looked right as rain but it were done, changed 'em all out, an' we used heavier chain than before.  Bigger rudder so it were more'n th' thinner steel kin take."

"Ye don' skip on a refit, Skeeter," Loren reminded him.  "We be headin' fer th' far side o' th' world, and we got no friends yonder."

The bosun nodded and knuckled his brow and dashed off to make his final inspection.

"Th' ol' gal ain't ne'er looked no better," he said so only Shalinda could hear.  "Them Wallies are in fer a fearful shock.  We'll carve a stripe right out o' their own seas."

"Jedda is loadin' fer an army," he grinned as another net lowered into the hold.  "Three years o' rations fer th' crew.  She spent all our time in th' docks lookin' fer the best stuff t' last and beep a body healthy.  Nuthin's so simple as when I were a pup steppin' on my first deck.  Sure we got scurvy, spit out teeth and had out bones bend a mite, but we were a tough lot."

There was the faintest tone of teasing about age in his voice.

"Course, there's your plan too," he grinned.  "Pack away extra stores on yer bones.  'Specially in th' seat o' yer britches."

"Oh, aye, I remember you 'tough lot'.  Ain't much like gettin' sick when you come to shore and taste real food again," she teased back.

His remark about her shape though earned him a scowl and a small, embarrassed blush.  Lue had taken his share of glares and curses due to poorly considered comments about her growing curves.  And though she was more used to them now, they were still awkward at times.  "I ain't above usin' th' blunts on you, too, you know..." she set a hand on the small case of bolts strapped to her thigh.

"Course yer not," Loren grinned and took hold of a rope.  "Ye have t' be blunt, all yer pointy parts blunted too." And he shot up from the deck into the rigging to check the miles of lines aloft.

"Don't listen t' 'im," Arma said from behind.  "Yer padded th' right ways in th' right places."  She looked around the decks.  "We'll ne'er eat all o' that, lest we all really do get plump.  Looks like ye didn't skimp on th' engine bolts.  Lookin' fer more fights this time.  Last were too domesticated," she tried the word and fouund she liked it.  "Like that huge mattress ye sent below," Arma nudged her softly.

She could have shot him.  And had her handbow been loaded and armed, she would have.  She'd had plenty of practice shooting asses that took too long at crawling through the ropes during drills.  Lucky for him, Arma distracted her from taking more target practice.

"It ain't natural," Shalinda grumbled and shoved her hands in the pockets of her dress coat.  "Girls ain't supposed ta go from nothin' to too much so fast."  Her old jacket had been adjusted twice before the seamstresses gave up and just made her a new one, and this one too had already been taken out once.  It fit well now, but Jedda was certain that she still have more filling out to do.  She opened her mouth to talk tactics, but sputtered and choked on her tongue at mention of the mattress.  "That's fer Lue," she finally managed to grumble out with a brighter blush.  "He's too big fer the old bed."  Shalinda elbowed Arma back with a sour look.  "I thought you were supposed ta be on my side.  What happened to womanly solidarity and all that?"

"I'm all fer th' solidarity," Ama grinned.  We're both gettin' it regular so we kin gloat solidarily like, better'n whining t'gether 'bout gettin' nuthing a'tall!"  Arma was clearly enjoying this.  "An' its a good thing the bed's all he's too big fer," she giggled wickedly.  So, wi' the cap'n gettin' hers all we have left t'do is finish th'  load out and find a sail fulla wind.  I'm all ready fer a good boardin' action.  takes some 'th' fun out havin' that privateer letter, but I kin adjust.  That Lord Thomas feller had a special deliver sent below t'yer cabin, case ye didn't know."

"I hate when he gets involved," she grumbled, changing the topic.  "We keep the shipping lanes mostly clear for his boats, you'd think he could at least have the decency to leave us alone in return," she sighed.  "When yer man is done hidin', have 'im run the crew through light drills when they're done loading.  I don't wanna find out how out of shape 6 months ashore has made 'em right before the fun starts.  And I'd better make sure that creep ain't sent something I want to return before we leave..."

Shalinda took her time meandering down to her cabin, checking in on improvements and changes here and there.  The crew was in good spirits, which put her in a good mood, which made her able to face what was waiting for her with only mild hesitation.

Sitting beside the captain's writing desk was a new chart table under the gallery windows in the stern.  It was unusual in that not only did it serve as a place to spread her charts it had a general map of the world set in its surface, shining under heavy layers of clear varnish.  Beside it was a leathery chart tube, heavily impregnated in something waxy to protect them from the elements, and inside were detailed charts of what appeared to be the shorelines of the entire world.  Ocean and coastal depths were marked, shipping and common smuggling routes, standard currents and trade winds, and even the locations of shallows, reefs and sand bars.  Next to the chart case was a belted sword, the buckle of the belt was shaped like a rose and the cutlass it held was bright steel, the finest steel in fact with roses on vines extending the length of the blade.  The maker's mark was known to her eye immediately, its presence on any blade added a thousand sovereigns to the price of the blade regardless of the quality of the weapon as it was made by Galen himself.  It was razor sharp and she could see her face reflected in its surface with complete clarity.

She spent some time going over the new charts, as amazed by each new one as she had been by the one before.  It was rare to find a single map of such detail.  So to now own an entire set...  The Rose and her crew were dangerous even sailing blind.  They'd be downright lethal if even half of these notes were still true when they arrived at these coasts.

If Shalinda didn't think Thomas was up to something with the charts, she was definitely suspicious when she lifted the blade.  The craftsmanship was incredible, and when she beheld the maker's mark with wide eyes, she understood why.  The sword was probably worth twice that of her entire ship.

Paranoia struck, and Shalinda turned around quickly and looked around her cabin, half expecting to see Thomas puffing on his cigar and waiting to tell her what he wanted in return for these treasures.

And the cabin was empty, no man or smoke in evidence.  The only sound were the chants of the men hauling lines to bring the cargo in and the sounds of mallets hammering wedged in to keep the barrels and kegs tightly in place.  The organized chaos of making ready and the excited buzz of men going back to sea at last.  Shore was nice, but wives and children tire the nerves of a sailorman after too long and they were ready to trade home and hearth for the pitching seas.

"Last day ashore," Lue said as he poked his head in the door and stepped in when he confirmed she was alone.  "I'm sick o' th' feel o' dirt b'tween my toes!"

She grinned and slid the blade back into it's scabbard, and set to putting it on.  "An' how d'you think I feel, hm?"  But for the first four years of her life and short trips ashore, her whole life had been spent at sea.  The suite they'd shared at one of the inns had been nice, but she was ready to be back on the water.  She paused for a moment to admire the buckle-rose.  It was a bit feminine for her tastes, but it was a nice touch.  "Any last requests before I close th' coffers on this stop?"

"An' here I thought you didn't like to share the view," she winked.

"Ain't it just?"  There was still a bit of awe in her voice, and she crossed the floor to show him.  She drew it out carefully and laid it across the fabric of her sleeve so he could get a good look at it, and so she could see his reaction when he saw the maker's mark.  "It's from Lord Thomas," she stated bluntly, with a bit of a sour note, though it was mild.  "And charts like I ain't never seen.  Detailed maps of all the coasts, anywhere you'd want to go and anywhere else, too, down to the reefs and sandbars."

"What view," he grinned.  "Ye'd be hid beneath me!" then he examined the blade he showed her.  "Ye could shave a boar wi' that edge," he marveled, "an' he might not notice.  "Mayhap he has interests in th' western seas and reckons we'll make it easier for 'em."

"That old shit's got interests everywhere," she grumbled.  "A'course he wants us to clear the way.  He's just following where we're already going.  Our success just makes it easier for him to do whatever he's up to."  She slid the blade back into it's home and adjusted the belt a little.  "Well, let's go see what asses need booted to make sure we're ready to leave with the tide in the morning."

On deck the last loads were swinging onto the deck, above Loren was swinging through the rigging and pointing out shortcomings in a loud and clear voice that dripped sarcasm.  Monkey Thumbs dashed by with his sheaths of paper and one of the ship's boys trailing with his ink pot and more papers as the purser struggled to keep abreast with everything coming aboard and where it was located in the ship.  The mates were below supervising the stowage to keep the ship in balance and trim.

"We'll be ready t' sail on th' fore dawn tide,' Lue predicted.  "Gonna let th' crew celebrate t'night, or spare yerself th' sport o' seein' 'em all sick o'er th' rails?"

"We'll set it in shifts.  Those without families take their last leave after we're all set up here until evening.  Stagger their leave so that as they return, them with families can go out.  But I want everyone back by half through mid-watch.  They can get sick over the rails when we make our next port," she grinned.

Lue nodded and looked around.  "Look at her Lindy," he sighed.  "Better'n this ship has looked i years, an' its all yer doin'."

He ws right about how the ship looked, all of the dings and hurts accumulated by years of hard use now gone and even tied to the dock she looked ready to fly.  Loren slid down from the rigging and grinned at his captain.  "Ready topside fer sea," he reported.  "Ever line, stay, pulley, spar and knot is done up proper."

"Could'na done it without you n' the rest," she smiled fondly up at him.

"Set the leave rotation," she filled Loren in on what she wanted when he joined them.  "I'm itchin' to get back out there, and I want everyone accounted for well ahead of time.  I'll meet wi' Dargas after supper, I've some new charts I want his eye on."
