The Unknown Face
« on: November 28, 2014, 10:56:24 AM »
Samara Bragg was a lucky woman.  She had known this since the moment she was adopted by Cecil and Franchesca Bragg when she was four.  She was always treated with kindness and respect and encouraged to do and be anything she wanted to be.  She worked hard to live up to the Bragg name.  She did everything she was supposed to do.  She studied hard and never did anything that might displease her adopted parents.  Until she decided to marry two men, simultaneously, that is.  But even that was accepted and allowed, much to her surprise and immense pleasure.

She was happily married to the loves of her life and together they had four children and she was the Grand Duchess of Delloram.  Her best friend was the princess royal, the future queen of the country.  Samara wanted for nothing, pursued things to keep her mind and body fit and ready for anything. She was loved, liked and happy.

Despite of it all Samara did have a curiosity to know where she had come from.  Who her birth parents were, what had happened to them, how it was that she had been found and so many other questions that she couldn't formulate them. And, she often had a dream, a dream of faces.  She didn't know who's faces she saw and in the morning she couldn't describe the face.

She had searched for her roots once, years before.  She had gone to the country she was born in and found the location where she was first found.  A treacherous journey that she probably shouldn't have gone on.  But, she had to know.  Had to see if she could find the faces she dreamt about.  There were things and places she vaguely remembered, but she didn't recognize anyone and had to leave quickly or risk a war between her adopted country and her country of origin.  When she left, she decided to let the past go.

Samara was a busy woman.  She worked out with a trainer each morning for hours, then sat in long, somewhat, productive meetings with advisers and leaders in her province.  She lunched with family and friends, in the evenings she played with her children.  During the tournament season she competed against the mightiest men in the country for the chance at winning the title of victor.

Very few thought the tiny, four foot, girl who didn't even weigh seven stone would be much of a competitor.  But, they had all been proven wrong when she surprised the nation and won the title her first year of competition, and when they had discovered she had competed pregnant as well, well the country was amazed. Since then, Samara had competed and practiced every chance she got.

Life was good and the dreams didn't bother her, they weren't nightmares or anything sinister like that.  They were just faces, faces she couldn't describe, nothing to worry about.

Until the day she saw one while awake.  Just for a moment, almost like in her dreams.  Just a flash of a face, and then it was gone.  The face melted into the crowded street and the person was just gone, like a dream.  That was the day the dreams began to mean something to her.  Because now, she knew that it wasn't a dream.  They were memories, of... Well she didn't know and that was the problem.  She needed to know, needed answers.

Samara had never told anyone about her dreams.  She felt it had no purpose.  It would be a concern to her husbands and could hurt her father's feelings.  She figured her mother could have handled it, as Franchesca was a practical person who had childhood issues of her own.  But, Samara also knew that her mother would tell her father and besides, she didn't want to burden anyone else with something so trivial as a dream.

She considered what to do for days.  She doodled during meetings, trying to draw the face she had seen in the crowd.  It was useless, for numerous reasons.  First and foremost, she still wouldn't have been able to describe him and then there was the tiny thing of not being able to draw.

She thought about Thomas, her patron father.  He could read minds, but she didn't want to bother him.  He was an extremely busy man and Samara knew that although he would make time, this wasn't important.  No one was in danger, no one needed to worry because they were just distant memories.  Except that she had seen a face, she knew she had.

She considered going to her older sister, Alyssa.  Alyssa had always been easy to talk to and understood about being adopted, as she herself had also been.  But, there was a big rift between them.  Had been for about many years. At first it was little things that pulled them apart.  Alyssa married a man who Samara was dating, she took every opportunity to win against Samara, though Samara was unaware of their competition. In the end Alyssa wanted something that Samara couldn't give her and Alyssa couldn't forgive it.  Dwarfs can be so stubborn.  No Alyssa couldn't help, no, she wouldn't help her.

Samara stuck to her schedule and did all her usual activities, but she kept thinking about how to solve her mystery.  One day she was reading the broadsheet, alright fine, she was reading the gossip column.  She always read it, you just never knew if they would reveal some secret of your life that you yourself didn't know.  It had happened before, and besides it was fun to wallow in the gossip.  On this day however, besides the usual he is dating her and she hates him, there was a brief article about Tamalyn Traveler's artistic skills.  The article talked about her art shop in Valcastria and went on to describe the countries attempted revolution.  Of course, Samara was well aware of the revolution, one of her husbands was from there so they kept up on the news and she herself had read the reports disseminated from the crown.

What Samara found interesting about the article was the mention of Tamalyn.  Tamalyn was younger than Samara, so they had never been close even though their mothers were best friends.  But, what really sparked her interest was that Tamalyn was Thomas' daughter.  Tamalyn who could draw and, Samara was sure, and could probably read minds.  In fact, Samara knew she could, she remembered meeting her once when Tamalyn was much younger.

Tamalyn had been about eight or nine when Samara met her.  She was quiet, powerful and scary.  She rarely spoke, and when she did she would comment on things that weren't said as if you had spoken them.  She wasn't trying to get into your head, she just did.  It wasn't so much as lack of control than it was a misunderstanding of what she should and shouldn't do.  For some, mostly children her own age, it didn't bother them.  But for young adults who had lusty thoughts and secrets to keep from their parents, this was worrying.  You don't want a nine year old asking why you had spent the day escaping your guards and running away with the princess.  Which is exactly what she had done to Samara.

To say she had avoided her since isn't exactly true.  But, she hadn't attended any party that Tamalyn had invited her to.  Samara told herself because it was too far away, but she knew it was more than just that.  She didn't want Tamalyn just popping in and out of her head like she had as a child.  Tamalyn was grown now, or at least on her own.  Thomas would not have let the girl do that if he hadn't thought she could control herself.  Or that is what Samara was reasoning herself with now.  Now that she might have a need to see Tamalyn again.

Of course, there in lie the problem.  Samara didn't want to be one of those people who only wanted to use others.  Who never thought about anyone but herself.  She detested those people, yet here she was considering going to see someone whom she hadn't seen in more than a dozen years for her own personal gain.  Someone who had invited her to multiple parties and, if the gossip columns were correct, needed to establish herself.  Samara sighed and set the paper down, thinking very hard.

Samara looked over at her two husbands.  "What do we know of Tamalyn Traveler?  I don't mean that she is Thomas' daughter or anything like that.  What do we know of her position in Valcastria, what are her needs an goals?  Do we know?  Can we find out?"

The two men stared at her for a long time. Finally Bram got up and retrieved a book.  Samara recognized it as his journal that he wrote in code based on reports he received from the Courtesan Guild.  "There really isn't much" he said looking through the book.  Americk the Blade works with her and he is vigilant in keeping her activities secret.  She has numerous friends who live with her, she runs her father's business interests in Valcastria and has hired a few courtesan to work for her.  She has numerous parties, though none since the revolution.  There is almost nothing about her personally since that came about, though that isn't uncommon since most of the reports from Valcastria since then have been about more important things.  She as been seen a few times in Aldoreane, most recently at a party.  She has two Lord Defenders as guards and never goes anywhere without at least one of them.  Is this what you wanted to know?"

Samara nodded thoughtfully, "maybe" she said still thinking, "and what of the revolution?  My reports say that it looks as if the revolutionist have failed.  Are there still active battles in the city?"

Helm shrugged, "the fighting is over in the city for the most part.  Only two portions manged to keep the revolutionists at bay completely.  They are both run by Tamalyn Traveler.  She appears to be good at her job, or her father hired excellent men, perhaps both are true.  The city hasn't recovered yet, food is scarce and there are still occasional skirmishes.  Additionally, you are not going there" he added with a tone of concern in his voice.  "It is the dead of winter and your apartments in the city are not in a safe area at the present" he clarified quickly.

"I didn't say I wanted to go there" she said slightly exasperated, mostly because she was sure they would have to travel there soon.  "I am just thinking about her.  Probably because there is an article about her in the paper."  Samara knew that wouldn't convince her husbands, but for now it would have to do.

They didn't know anything more than she had already known, oh sure they had more details but, the facts were just as murky as they had been before she asked.  She would consider things further, she decided.
