The Eternal War
« on: March 03, 2009, 09:27:52 AM »
Night in the desert was dark, empty....and cold. Temperatures dropped well below freezing, with a chill wind unhindered by vegetation or barriers stirred up sand in a cloud of blinding fury. Those without the proper attire would rapidly fall victim to the desert's environment, dieing off slowly to feed the carrion birds and scavengers that hid beneath the sand.
The caravan rumbled its way along a path of packed-down sand, toughened and made tight by the countless travelers who followed it. It was the only road through the desert known as "the Boneyard." These merchants and their guards, however, were hardened travelers, and had made this trip many times. They knew well the dangers they faced, and were well equipped and prepared to deal with them. Guards carried spears or halberds resting upon their shoulders, with a broadsword or scimitar carried on their belt. Archers carried lightweight hunting bows and rode camel steeds; ideal for mobile ranged fire in the shifting sands. One or two even carried an extremely rare and expensive repeating crossbow. Even the merchants were armed with daggers and short swords, one or two carrying normal or hand-held crossbows as well. All were alert, taking it in shifts to rest, and all were confident that they knew what dangers lay in wait.
They had no idea just how wrong they were on this night.
The creatures scurried through the darkness, rising from the sands to surround the caravan; black, indistinguishable silhouettes in the black night. The caravan reacted, shouts and curses bringing the sleepers awake, the clanking of crossbows winding, the rattle of arrows and bolts slipping free of quivers. However, the animals were beginning to panic, and the caravan had to be halted. One of the camels tossed its archer rider, and the sickening, wet crack as his head struck the hard-packed dirt denoted that his neck was broken. The rest managed to get their mounts under control, cursing and shouting, wheeling to face the enemy as torches were lit and brought to the fighting line, casting their flickering light across the ranks of the unseen foe. Hands tightened around weapons, eyes grew wide in shock, the stink of fear and a few released bowels filled the desert air as the men saw what they were facing.
Nightmares brought to life.
Many began to pray right then and there, dropping weapons and falling to their knees, begging for some higher power to save them as the horrors closed in around them. They were still praying as clawed hands closed over their heads and ripped them from their shoulders. Others tried to fight; the repeating crossbows launched bolt after bolt into their midst, halberds hacked and stabbed, sword blades flashed and danced.
All to no avail.
The monsters continued to advance, all rippling muscle, scaly hide, fanged mouths, glowing red eyes. Spikes ran along their spines to the tip of their tails, and great dragon-like wings sprouted from their backs. Natural blades formed of their bone slid from their forearms, and their general basis seemed to be that of the lizard-men of the marshes. Attacks bounced from their hides, blades and claws ripped through human flesh and armor as though it were rotting vegetation. It only took the monsters minutes to annihilate the entire caravan, and once they were done, they vanished...disappearing into the night as suddenly as they had appeared.

It was the next afternoon that another caravan came across the remains. Wagons were burned, goods scattered across the sands, bodies lay in pieces all over, twisted into nightmarish caricatures of death. Heads rested on the tips of halberds, tongues lolling and eyes staring sightlessly as gore dripped onto the sand. The carrion birds were already at work, ripping chunks of flesh from the corpses for their meals. The Shocked merchants and their guards halted to begin examining the scene...wading through entrails and blood-soaked sand. It was near the forward wagon, that of the caravan master, that they found it...the corpse of one of the monsters. It had been killed when the caravan master shoved his dagger through its left eye; a last act of defiance as the thing's clawed hand was buried into his chest to pierce his heart. They remained there, locked in a death-struggle....no carrion birds disturbed those two corpses. The sound of retching could be heard from some of the greener guards, though even the veterans looked unsettled at the sight of the creature before them.
"So...what the hell is it?" The guard captain ventured to ask. The answer came from behind them, from the wizened old man who had also signed up as a guard, despite his frailty and age.
"That, youngster, is a Demon. I must admit, I am quite surprised the captain killed it. I suppose the dagger was enchanted and the monster overconfident...though we will never know, since by now the monster's blood has destroyed any magic on that weapon. It is strange, though...why would a Demon be out here? In fact, from the tracks and destruction...there was more than one. This is not typical. Demons in groups can only be commanded by a Demon Lord, and I cannot imagine what a Demon Lord might want with a caravan. Unless the Lord is itself working for a cult that has ulterior motives." He stroked his beard thoughtfully, considering the scene. "Very interesting." Looking around, he seemed to notice the dumbfounded stares that all those around him were giving, and he chuckled lightly. "Ah, yes...you are wondering how I know this? I am a sorcerer, of the Akkash guild...the city of Akkash happens to be your destination, which is why I joined your caravan. And yes...all the stories you thought were legend and myth, concerning the three Planes of Existence? They are quite true, as the monster there should indicate. This is a sign...dark times are upon the world. Let us hurry on to Akkash...the sorcerers must be informed of this development....and, we don't want to be the next target."
The caravan continued along, taking the time to make a respectfully edgy detour around the carnage of the Demon victims. The followers stared, shocked at what they saw, the men grim and hurried. Good moods would be sparse for the remainder of the trip, and the news they carried would soon throw the entire world into an uproar.

---------------

For those who are interested in joining this thread...it's something of a Diablo-ish universe, picking up about three weeks after these events, with several more attacks by Demons all over the world and with increasing frequency. No further Demons have been slain <yet>. The world is in a mass panic, fearing the end is coming soon. If you wish to create a character for the Mortal Plane, the racial options are the Humans, who control the Western half of the world's single landmass, and the Elves, who control the Eastern half, and dragons, who are everywhere and utterly neutral(they just want to be left alone, basically. No, they are not evil, and no, they are not good). For a being of the Angelic or Demonic Planes, the description of race/subrace is given in Baketsou's portfolio thingy. Other than those few limits...well...it is freeform, after all!

The days in this city of trade were rather dull. The humans here were far too involved with gaining riches to even be able to appreciate how short their own lives are. Humans are the most evil thing that has ever been created by the higher beings. Why such a creature is made into this Mortal Plane; such an answer will never be conceived. They are a bunch of rotten scavengers that make no attempt to harmonize with the environment around them. It is such a pity that their human intellect is a supposed marvel when they themselves do not realize how their existence is so futile.

Although this thought process is completely biased coming from a greater being with a curse of immortality. Oh, Did I say curse? I meant wonderful gift blessed upon my coming to existence by the Plane

It was quiet this early in the morning, even for a busy city like this one.  Merchants had yet to open their shops, peddlers were resting their voices before they shouted themselves hoarse, trying to look better than their neighbor.  Most of those who lived on the streets were just coming awake with the daylight; it wasn't wise to sleep past sunrise, or you might not rise again.

On the edge of town, there was a cluster of squat, older buildings.  They had been built when the city was first a town, making up the church and town hall.  Now, with the wealth that easily flowed in and out of the city, both buildings had long since been replaced, but no one had taken the time to take these down.  An entrepreneurial spirit had purchased them for a steal from the government and turned them into housing for those who didn't have enough for their own home, but could certainly afford something better than the slums.  The church housed four families of varying combinations, an old couple, a young recently married couple, a couple with four young children, and a single woman brave enough to live alone.  The church had been divided into these living spaces, and all shared a central storage, living, and cooking space.  It would be a bit of a stretch to call the inhabitants 'friends,' but there was a sense of communal living, and mutual respect for fellow housemates.

Casandra was the woman in question; tall, of a somewhat stockier build with ample hips and bustline, she had long brown hair that was absolutely stick straight.  The only really distinguishing feature about her was the pair of brilliant golden eyes that watched the world carefully, and took in every single bit of information she could possibly absorb at any given moment.  Those eyes reflected what they saw, and what they thought without really considering how it might make someone else feel.  Casandra was bold enough to look anyone brave enough to look back square in the eyes, daring them to speak ill of her.  She was not outwardly bold, nor was she tremendously brave, outgoing, or outspoken; but no one could call her a wilting flower either.  She lived alone, and no one really seemed stupid enough to chide her for her choices.

Casandra did harbor a private dream she shared with no one but her own soul; she desperately wanted to join the Sorcerer's Guild.  For many years, as long as she had lived alone, she had attempted to practice what little skill she could naturally harness.  It usually ended in singed hair and a destroyed piece of furniture, but nothing deterred her.  It was why she lived alone; women were not exactly...encouraged...to join the guild.  Mockery was something she had no stomach for, and so simply kept these dreams to herself, one day hoping someone would notice her internal talent, and ignore her gender.

As the sun rose slowly, Casandra ventured out of the church, her basket for groceries hanging off her elbow.  It was shopping day, and she didn't much care for the crowds she knew would be out soon.  She much preferred to get an early start, and have a shot at all the freshest items.  The only people out this early were the old women who knew no different than their early shopping, and many of them smiled kindly on her as she walked past.

It took her about an hour to get to the market, and by then, all the merchants and peddlers were ready for the day.  Had she come here even a moon ago, it would have been twice as busy.  But with the state of the world...many people were afraid to leave their own homes until full daylight, when the demons were less likely to come out.  Casandra had no doubt in the stories, but to the same measure knew the city was safe.  She wasn't concerned in the least, and did not intend to change her life just because demons were causing trouble elsewhere.

Across the square, she spotted her favorite butcher, and wove through the crowd to get to him before all the best cuts were gone.

It was just as Casandra would be finishing her business with the butcher that something unheard of in the past thousand or so years occured. The darkness still fading witht he sunrise was cleansed fully by a brilliant white that seemed to be descending from the clouds above. As the light grew closer and brighter, a simple sense of...serenity and peace would wash over the inhabitants, and the source became distinguishable as a an orb, roughly six feet in diameter, spinning away as it emitted the rays of light. The orb grew brighter and brighter as the notes of a song so pure in a language that could no longer be understood even by the priests and clerics began to spin through the streets, bringing even the most hardened criminals to tears of joy. The light flashed, and then faded completely, leaving a single being floating in the air above the city center, two pairs of great white-feathered wings beating the air rhythmically, the apparent female giving off her own source of the purest white, clad in flowing white robes, simply radiating purity.
An Angel had descended to the city.
The response of the Akash Sorcorer's Guild was immediate. A rather impressive retinue rushed out to bear witness to whatever this being might be heralding. Once the city center was still, the Angel spoke.
"You of the city of Akkash....All is not yet lost. Though you turned from our teachings 1,026 years ago and have not seen another of us since, we have decided that your repentance in sorrow is complete. You will now have a chance to correct your mistakes. Should you do so, we shall send our own Avatar of War to fight against the daemons who threaten the Mortal Realm. To recieve this Avatar, the Sorcorer's Guild and the Church must combine to perform the Rites of Vengeance. Cease your discrimination, and bring all with a holy or magical potential who so desire your teachings into your folds. Train them, and have them present during the Rites of Vengeance. When the Rites are completed to these terms, we shall sned your salvation." Another blinding flassh of light signalled the Angel's departure, leaving the city inhabitants to decide for themselves what they would do.

Such a sight was to behold as such a mythical holy creature would make himself apparent to those living in this realm. It has been ages since Kyousuke has ever seen an angelic being, and she bring word of an attack from the Daemons? What an interesting period in time he has arrived in. How should he ever go about this?

The best would be to go about exactly how he does for all of eternity, observe and enjoy the wonderful feats man can overcome, although the appearance of an Angel is certain to bring some sort of chaos. Ironic, but it seems there is something amidst that would cause this much stress with the Angelic Plane as such.

As Kyousuke sat atop the roof of a large tower witnessing this scene end; He blinked his eyes.

"Nice to see you're still about Kaz." Kyo said

Kaz is another one like Kyousuke. A being of the Plane of Time, though one of the few left around.

"What are you doing here? Following me again?"

Kaz would smirk momentarily, then his expression would fade to such a neutral look, as all beings of time usually kept stapled on thier faces.

"Why I grew out of that ages ago. I merely came to see what being was shifting the Planes. Things are so dull these times that many of us lurk around here at this very moment simply to witness it."

Kyo let a small smiled form from his lips knowing that he was right. He knew that there were more of his kind in this instance of time than there had been in the same instance since the time they all were formed into existence by the Plane.

Time passed by and soon the Beings of Time all left the instance and the only one left was Kyousuke. He rarely jumped around now since it was so tiresome. The others must have accelerated themselves and left this zone to see whats to come, but it has grown so old that Kyousuke prefers to sit through it and wait for the events to come. He let himself into the market area and walked among the humans. He seemed to glow strangely compared to everyone else, not to mention his attire would cause him to stand out from the rest of the people. It was even more obvious as he walked; Everyone stared at him momentarily, but not so long to cause him to notice, but he still does.

Blinking, Casandra had turned towards the light as it filled the square.  In shock, she, along with many other bustling women, had dropped her basket onto the ground, the freshly purchased meat rolling out across the cobblestones, the paper it was wrapped in coming undone.  Her spirit was filled with an enormous sense of peace and purpose as she listened to the angel's words.  When he finished speaking, she was frozen in her state of that filling peace, and took in a slow, deep breath to bring herself back to reality.  For a moment, the square was silent, and then the bustling began, this time at a higher pitch than before.  Alone with no one to talk excitedly with, Casandra bent down and collected her escaped meat, muttering a bit and brushing the dirt off of it.  Oh well, dirt had never hurt her before.  At least it hadn't rolled into the nearby pile of horse dung.

Once her purchases were safely stashed away in her basket again, she started over towards a produce stand, her mind whirling with the possibilities.  The angel had called for all of those with the Gift to go to the nearest school, and be trained to help fight against the forces that were threatening to take over the city.  She was included in that group, and knew she should go, but was still a little nervous.  She was, after all, a she.  They were not always accepted with the most open of arms.  But the angel had called everyone...

Her face was still distance as she stepped up and started to select the apples she wanted.  She moved almost dreamlike through the rest of her purchases, and before she knew what she was doing, Casandra had turned her steps towards the school.

The Sorcerer's Guild and the Church were frantic. The demands of the Angel went against everything the city had practiced for...well...apparently, for the past 1,026 years. There was an enormous council called, with the highest representatives of both the Church and Guild, to discuss the matters. Many sought to interpret the Angel's words.
"By all, did she mean male and female? Or just all of the men?"
"They meant to exclude criminals, right?"
"What about children? Such a young age, we can't put that kind of responsibility with them!"
"Many of the Gifted don't have enough power to be of any possible use. Nothing can be gained by including them!"
Until two voices rang out over everything.
"SILENCE!"
Immediately, the entire meeting was still as the High Priest and the Head Sorcerer entered the meeting. The two met in the middle and exchanged short bows before facing those assembled. The Priest spoke first.
"This is an enormous opportunity to receive the Blessings of the Angels once again, but you fail to see the additional factors. They would not doom the entire Mortal Realm because of a single, obstinate city. Here is the correct interpretation of the Messenger's words: 'If you meet our conditions, you will receive our Favor once again. If you do not, your city will be allowed destruction at the hands of the daemons.' If we do not meet the conditions properly, we will serve as an example to all those who do not follow their teachings."
Next, it was the Sorcerer that spoke.
"Stop bickering about our old traditions. The Angel said all, that means all. Man, woman, child, criminal. We have little time if we wish to summon their warrior."
Defeated, those gathered nodded and dispersed, turning to the churches and schools to await the anticipated flood of people who wished acceptance. None would be turned away.
