Chapter I
Kraftwerk

Dietrich Schneider had once been a national hero in his homeland, a   soldier that had fought for his country through numerous conflicts.  He   always believed that Germany should once again be a feared nation, one   that should be taken as a serious threat to the new world upon them.    They did not have a charasmatic leader, but they had brave men and   women who were willing to die for what they believed in.  Dietrich was   one of those men.  The rank on his old military uniform displayed the   status of a captain, and had he remained in the army then he could have   achieved much more than that.  Instead, the outfit lay rusting inside a   wardrobe that he never dared look in to.  Closed to his eyes.

He   sat in the back of a truck which had come to a stop, the journey had   been long and mysterious.  Without windows, he had lost track of the   numerous left and right turns they had taken to get to this point of the   map.  In front of him sat his partner, a red-headed woman.  Her name   was Adalinda, and on nights like this she was always by his side.  She   fought the same cause as him, except her methods were different.  She   believed that to reach success, suffering must be inflicted upon people   of all nationalities -- including that of the Germans.  In fact, the   pair sat outside a west German power station, which supplied almost   one-fifth of the nation's power.  The back of the truck was filled with   explosives.  A large part of the world was soon going to go dark.

Dietrich   wore a black jumpsuit -- loose-fitting but heavily-lined with kevlar to   withstand the occasional bullet from a security guard's gun.  Draped   diagonally across his torso -- from his left shoulder to right hip --   Dietrich had armed himself with six silver grenades, each one displaying   a sinister looking warning on the front.  Adalinda sported the same six   grenades, their purpose had not been revealed to her until now.

"Those   grenades you're wearing?  I made them just for you.  High-capacity gas   grenades.  Just one sniff of it is lethal.  It'll burn them from the   inside-out and give the poor bastard a slow and painful death."    He passed Adalinda a gas mask, and put one on himself, fastening the   straps behind his head securely in an almost paranoid way.  Almost as if   he was worried he would breathe in the gas grenade himself.

Adalinda had been in the dark about the whole plan, other than Dietrich promising her that there was going to be some destruction happening tonight.  Their faces were now hiding behind the rubber of the masks that would keep them alive while their victims suffered at their feet.  Yet even behind those two windows, he could see her eyes in an orgasmic trance of excitement, the thought of murder was almost a hobby to her.  Dietrich and Walther had pulled a lot of strings to keep her from going back to prison, and already she had committed enough crimes to keep her behind bars for ten lifetimes.  The German reached over and pulled her fingers away from the grenade, keeping their fingers locked and intertwined for a few microseconds.

"We're at the Rhineland power station, my dear.  We're going to shut this place down."  It didn't sound as dramatic as it did in Dietrich's head, but the aftermath was where the drama would begin.  Once the entire region was powerless, it was only a matter of time before the remainder of north Germany followed.  And with Dietrich's little tool he had brought along -- there was no easy fix to put the power back on.  "Now don't go throwing all of them at once.  Even just one grenade in one of these corridors will wipe out a dozen security guards."  He had to make sure that she was concentrating and focused, he worried that she wasn't always listening and there had been occasions where she never followed the plan.  It was just one of these things when it came to Adalinda -- if you brought her along for little adventures like this, then you were going to have to think on your feet sometimes.

Dietrich opened the back door and climbed out of the vehicle.  In front of them stood the large power station that he spoke of.  They would be entering through the front door, hitting it hard and fast.  Already he had a grenade in his hand, finger fidgeting and preparing to flick the pin.  He jogged up to the wall and pressed himself flat against it, side-stepping along to the front door and smashing his padded-elbow in to the glass door.  The grenade was thrown in.  The place quickly filled with deadly smoke.

Behind that mask she wore, he could see her eyes in an orgasmic trance at the thought of murder, and sometimes he wondered why

The alarm had sounded, the mechanical noise crying out for attention and reinforcements.  The grenade thrown by Dietrich had burst in to a display of thick cloud which covered their break-in.  It also fooled the security guards in to thinking that it was a mere harmless smoke grenade, only to discover their error far too late to protect themselves.  The German walked towards the security office round the corner from the main door, memorising the route he was to take.  An unlucky victim of their assault sat motionless in the computer chair, his face displaying a freeze-frame of sheer horror, as if he had died of fright.  Dietrich casually shoved him to the ground and sat down in his place, cracking his fingers in preparation for the next step.

"Adalinda, where are you my dear?"  He asked, looking through the glass window in front of him yet seeing nothing but cloud and death.  "Don't get careless out there.  I'm sure a couple of them will be wearing gas masks soon."  He didn't think they'd be that smart, however, and he knew that Adalinda would probably take care of any stragglers.
The German began to hack in to the computer terminal, typing in the codes which he had been given.  Unfortunately, he was far from being a whiz-kid on the keyboard and his strokes were slow and hesitant -- frequently searching the keys for a letter to finish the sentence.  After a few minutes of hacking -- which would have taken a normal person about thirty seconds -- Dietrich was in to the secure system files, and took great pleasure in deleting everything that he could.  Standing up, he dug deep in to one of his pockets and pulled out a floppy disk -- inserting it in to the disk drive and watching as the computer monitors began to go in to meltdown.  The virus was already taking effect.

Returning to the main corridor, Dietrich was nearly taken off-guard by the appearance of a member of security wearing a gas mask.  He wasn't slow to react, though, and quickly took the wind out of the man with a blow to the chest.  As he stammered back, Dietrich grabbed hold of the snout of the man's gas mask and flipped it from his face.  "That's cheating."  Dietrich spoke, shaking his head and tossing away the mask.

"No, not yet."  Dietrich brushed passed Adalinda and walked further in to the power station, paddling through the thickening smoke and it's dangers that lurked behind it.  It appeared as if there were no other threats, that the night staff had been despatched with rather quickly and successfully.  He looked round to check if Adalinda was following him, listening out for her heavy breathing due to the filter of the gas mask.  There was just one more room that he wanted to visit -- and after this, the place was finally going to go boom.
Kicking open the wooden door, the security lock broke at the door frame and gave way easily.  According to his watch, they had roughly four minutes before backup would arrive.  Dietrich didn't want to be here when they came, as he didn't quite fancy taking on heavily armed soldiers with nothing but a couple of poisonous grenades.  They didn't quite have the same effect out in the open as they did in the narrow-spaced corridors of the power station.  Digging in to his pockets once again, Dietrich picked out three sticks of dynamite which were roughly the length of a large cigar.  Each one was a red-shaped cylinder, with a long fuse dangling at the end of each one.

Gripping them together, he flicked open a lighter and sparked the flame on top, holding the ends of the fuses in to the dancing orange shape.  It brought them to life, and the fuse was beginning to shorten at an alarming rate -- much faster than even Dietrich anticipated.  Realising that he had to hurry up now, he rolled the three of them towards main generator, and very soon they disappeared underneath and out of view.  That was his cue to leave.  "Better start running... now!"  He warned Adalinda, as he grabbed the top of her arm and jogged towards the front door climbing in to the back of the van.  "Drive!"  He ordered the driver, just as the place began to blow.

Dietrich rested back against the hard, cold steel of the van -- pushing up the rubber mask from his face and tossing it on to the ground between his open legs.  He was knackered -- his face was sweating and the jumpsuit, with its heavy protective kevlar -- had proved to be a little more weight than he had anticipated to be carrying.  However, as the van burned it's tyres and skidded away from the danger zone, there was some relief that they had made it.  Another job was done and dusted, they were still alive and very soon the entire region was going to be one, big shadow on the map.  The power grid wouldn't be back up for days, but in that time he hoped that all hell would break loose.  Businesses, Government buildings, military stations all required power to operate.  With them down, the Rhineland was going to be a very uncertain place.

Of course, Dietrich would never do anything like this to his beloved Bavaria.  No -- Bavaria would keep free from his terrorist acts.  Soon, the south of Germany would rise from the ashes of the darkness and reign over old Germania.
Across from him, Adalinda seemed content with a good night's work.  It helped that there was an explosion and damage, rather than just a virus attack on the system.  His mobile phone rung, and Walther's number popped up on the screen.  "Yeah?" -- "It's done.  Didn't you see the fireworks?" -- "We're on our way now." -- "Yes, Ada is with me." -- "Who are we meeting?" -- "I've never heard of him.  Can you trust him?" -- "OK.  We'll go there now."
The conversation ended, and the German man looked towards the red-headed woman in front of him.  To her, it had been a one-sided conversation with nothing of the caller's words reaching her ears.  "We're taking a detour.  Meeting some Englander called Low.  Walther says you know him..."

For a moment, Adalinda wasn't sure if Dietrich had been speaking to her or not. Low? Henry Low? Turning slowly, she looked to Dietrich who sat across from her with a curious look on her face. She wasn't dumb, but Adalinda wanted to make sure that she had heard him right before saying anything. "Henry Low?" There really wasn't any possible way she could have misheard him. There were not many names you could get mixed up with 'Low' for a last name.
Crossing her legs at the knee Adalinda tilted her head back and to the side letting her long red hair fall behind her shoulder. Well, wasn't this turning out to be an interesting night. She had completely forgotten about that man. Almost completely, anyways. There were mixed feelings towards Henry Low. Most of them uncaring and finding him worthless, crazy even. But the other part of Adalinda's feelings wanted to thank him for what had happened to her for so long. For his 'concerned' visits, or whatever they were. And the fact that he was able to still roam like a crazy fuck while she had been put in such a terrible situation. Locked up for so long. So long.
Jiggling her foot, a smile appeared. Faint, but there. "Henry and I go way back. Years, even. What is it dear Walther is doing with dear ol' Henry? I do hope that there is enough time for us all to get a cup of tea together."
The night had been fun... so far. And Adalinda wasn't too keen on allowing Henry Low's sudden appearance to change that for her. She was a big girl, could overcome silly grudges easily. Nah, who was she kidding? Adalinda lived off the feeling of hate, and the terror and destruction that could come with it given the right push from the right people. Moving from her seat, Adalinda placed herself nicely into Dietrich's lap wrapping her arms around his neck and placing a very light peck on the top of his head. "You did well tonight, darling. Everything seems to be going according to plan." Yes, to plan. Who's plan? It would almost seem like Adalinda thought it was her plan that the carried out that night. That it was her who was making the shots. Maybe in a way it was. Whether inside her head, or her whispering little things into Walther's head. Either way, Adalinda knew for a fact that things she had planned since leaving her little cell were coming together. And she was pleased.
