In Dreams
« on: December 20, 2008, 11:57:40 PM »
I’ve been having these really weird dreams lately…

It started out normally enough.  You know, flashes of images that don’t really make sense.  But then they started to clear up, and flowed in sequence.  There were gaps at first, breaks in events that I didn’t understand, but, as the months went by, it became more and more smooth.  Until, some nights, I wasn’t sure that I was asleep or not.

It really started to worry me.  I was tired a lot.  It got to the point where sometimes the dreams were more real than real life.  It was like I was leading a double life; when I went to sleep in the real world, I woke up in the dream world, and when I slept there, I was awake here.  Strange, I know, but that was the best way I could understand it.

I must have been sick.  And I was scared.  My parents were, too.  They took me to get help; not the “white coats and needles at the funny farm” help, but to shrinks nonetheless.  They say that it’s the crazy people that think they’re sane, and I was truly afraid I was going mad.  The doctors didn’t seem to think so, so that was a relief all around.  They tried different things; dream interpreting to find out what was causing these dreams, what was going on in my life and how it might correlate back to the dream life I was living, but nothing made sense to them.  They tried drugs, to try and put me in a deep enough sleep that I wouldn’t dream, but that didn’t really work either.

It was after the drugs that I realized…my dream self was worried about the same things.  Strange dreams that were almost too real of a world and place she did not understand, just as hers was as foreign to me.  When I started the medicines, the dreams became hazy, but it was like I was looking through fog with cotton in my ears while really dizzy.

The meds weren’t changing my sleep…they were effecting that dream life.  In my dreams, I was afraid of what was happening to me too, thinking that I was becoming ill, or that a curse had been placed upon me.  My friends and companions assured me that all was well, but they were as stumped as I was.

In both worlds, I was afraid.

The doctors and the drugs weren’t working, so my parents tried a more…traditional method.  Although both my parents are Christian, they have strong ties to the Shinto community in our city.  One of the men who acts as a priest suggested perhaps a trip out to the country would help clear my thoughts.  He gave us the name and location of a shrine his cousin led, and told them to take me there for a little while.  So, we packed up the car, and off we went.

In the dream…it was the same.  News of a temple off in the forest with healing powers in the waters.  We were adventurers, of a sort, so traveling the great distance was really no big deal.  After all, I was sick, and I was a dear friend, and they would do whatever it took to make me well again.

Anymore, I don’t know if I’m asleep or awake, dreaming or living.  Both worlds are real, I’m convinced of this now.  But, I’m not so convinced on which one I belong in.  It’s always a hazy awareness, wherever I am.  Everything is a real, tangible dream.  And…I almost don’t care which one I end up in, so long as I pick one and stay there.  I think I really will go mad if this keeps up…

~~~
Well, it's not going to be a saga, but I think it'll be too long for short stories, so we'll dump it here for now, lol.  Not entirely sure where this is going...
"Aloranna, honey, are you awake?  We're here now..."  My mother's voice is distant, but her hand is cool against my cheek, and I turn my face absently towards it.  Without restful sleep, I've been sick alot, and I took a bad fever on the car ride.  Something's moving around me, shuffling fabric, and then I'm moving.
"Don't worry, sweetie, you'll be alright..."  My father's voice is almost in my ear, but it's still so far away sounding.  I can mostly make out what he's saying, which means that I'm more lucid that I've been in a while.  Maybe the country air really is helping...
I must have passed out, because when I woke up next, I was laying in a small bed in a sparsely decorated room.  Bed, small table and chair, nightstand with a basin and pitcher, and a small bowl with thin whisps of sweet smelling smoke drifting up from the bottom.  Incense?  I felt better though.  When I opened my eyes, I could make out more than just blurry splotches of color.  I've never given much credit to these old-time remedies, but, I'm starting to change my mind...
"Aloranna?  Annie, can you hear me?"  The archer bent over her sleeping form in the back of the wagon and brushed a hand over her sweaty brow.
"Leave her be, Toraeg.  This is the most restful she's been in weeks."  The swordsman kept his eyes on the road over the heads of the horses, trying to drive in the smoothest parts of the road.
"Agreed," the robed woman next to the swordsman nodded, but still cast an uncertain look to the woman who was finally sleeping.  "I wish we knew what was wrong, though."
"The priests will know," the archer, Toraeg nodded, as if to convince himself.  In truth, none of them were really sure...
"Itsuda-san...what happened?  We don't understand.  She was doing so well yesterday!"  Aloranna's mother clutched her kerchief, her eyes still damp.  Her father held her, grim faced, the same question in his eyes.
"In truth, I do not know myself.  It will take time to fully divine the cause of her illness.  I think it would be in her best interest to stay here for a time, so that we may help her."
"Here?  So far from home?"  The woman looked close to panicking, but the older Japanese gentleman smiled comfortingly at her.
"Please, Mrs. Kanter, it is for her wellbeing.  Consider her stay here as if she were at a hospital, if it will ease your worries.  We have tutors who can work with her, if you fear for her studies."
"He's right, Cora.  Annie needs to rest, away from whatever was stressing her.  They'll help her."
"Please trust in us, and return homee with the knowledge that we shall exhaust every option open to us to return your daughter to health."
"Keir...en..."  It was dark...why was it so dark?  Gods, but my throat hurt!  Where was I?  "Keir..."
"Shh, I'm here, Alie."  Keiran, the brash swordsman and de facto leader of their pack of wanderers, had been sitting watch while the others slept, and almost hadn't heard her voice.  But he was at her side now, laying next to her and drawing her into his arms, pressing a worried kiss to her forehead.  "I'm here."
"Water..."  I heard and felt him shifting, and a moment later, the mouth of his water skin was pressed to my lips.  It was awkward to drink at first, and I coughed a bit as the water ran down the wrong pipe, but he shifted me upright, and we got it figured out.  It was hard to focuss, but, I don't remember the last time I was this awake.  "Keiran?  I can't see..."
"Because your eyes are closed, Alie."
"Oh..."  I could almost hear the smile in his voice, and it was a comfort to have him close after spending so much time in dark solitude with those strange dreams.  "Are we there yet?"
"Not yet," he sighed into my hair.  "Soon, though.  Late tomorrow we hope."
"I had those dreams again..."
"I know," he sighed again, and held me tighter.  His chest was warm against my back, even through the thick leathers he wore.  I missed being held like that.
"Am I going insane?"  I was scared, and I couldn't help the small waver in my voice.  I'd often asked myself that question, but this was the first time I spoke it out loud.  It was frightening to hear.
"No, dearest.  You're not going insane.  You're ill, and when we reach the temple, the priests will heal you."
"I hope so..."
