Seflishness and Selflessness
« on: April 29, 2009, 12:47:11 AM »
This is one of the most interesting subjects in my opinion. Now when people look at how selfish certain people are, is it because they do things only for themselves that makes them selfish? Being selfish is when a person only things of himself. Being selfless means you do whatever you can to help others.

If you think about it though. Selfless people are also selfish. For their own reasons they feel a need to help people. Not necessarily to help others, but that is just a perk, but to make themselves feel better for helping others. Now if you think about it. Many people would say. Well he or she is helping other people. Thats not selfish at all, but the reasons behind it is to make ones own self feel better. Is that selfish?

Take a boy and his family. They are packing up to go on a trip. Now the boy completely packs his things and readies all of his luggage for the trip. He has it neatly prepared so that when they are all ready to leave they can do so easily. The boy believes that he is helpful because he had gotten all ready so that he wouldn't hold the family back when they are ready to go. But the parents on the other hand, explain to the boy that when he had done was selfish and not selfless. The reason is because he had not helped the rest of the family prepare. He only cared about his own things and that he was ready to go. He did not show consideration for the rest of his family. Now the boy is depressed because he feels that what he had done was selfless. He wanted to be ready so that he wouldn't hold anyone back, but it had back fired. Was it selfish or selfless?

Of course there are many opinions, but this issue seems to be raised more between the child and his or her parents so the relevance of this focuses more on the family and how opinions are formed based on the scenarios. Although as many would see. The child should always listen to his parents, but shouldn't the parents be reasonable with their child as well?

Great point, and one can also be selfish in selflessness, when one performs an act of kindness when no one but them knows about it, so no kudos or recognition, that's true selflessness. ;)

I agree, parents should be reasonable with their children as well. This also expands to the workplace between manager and employee. I often think it's a catch-22. Had that boy not finished ahead of the family, he would have been spoken to anyway about not finishing on time. Adults, managers, and the likes always feel a need to right and authoritative. If those below them do everything without a need for direction, then why would there be a need for the ones above. It's almost like when someone comes to inspect a job you made sure had no mistakes. They'll always find something--ALWAYS.

So if you're really intelligent, here's a hint to something I do often  ;)

When taking on a task, always leave aside a very simple mistake. As authority likes to find these things, let them find it. Later, you can show it off as an improvement and people will be proud of you. There are many ways to turn a negative response to your actions into a positive one that benefits you. Hm, is this selflessness or selfishness I wonder.
