When they arrived they found Serpental at the top of a tower, itself on a high hill, watching soldiers maneuver in a shallow valley below. Oldwine signalled not to announce them as Serpental dictated his thoughts to a pair of clerks that scribbled diligently as he observed and cited what was done right and wrong. He was actually critiquing the attackers and defenders, in effect he was training both sides at once.

Oldwine studied the map and then took out his own spyglass and studied the field.

Tamalyn stood and watched for a moment or two before she moved to stand by Indra. "Could you send someone to find me a sandwich or something. It looks like it will be a while before I meet with Serpental and I am hungry" she added. She then took a chair from her bag and sat down to watch the exercise.

A small table was set beside her and a tankard set beside her. A plate of bread, spicy beef, and cheeses and a bowl of sliced fruit were set upon it with a tankard. She could hear Serpental critiquing the action below. "The cavalry missed a key opportunity to flank the defenses, too late now, they slid over a line of infantry with archers to back them while they dithered on what to do. The scouts scout and report, but if leaders don't act, it is a waste of time."

Tamalyn nibbled and watched, "Could they have a different plan?" She asked Indra and Dread, leaving Oldwine to his own critiques and observations. Oldwine was surely studying both Serpental and the army, she didn't want to disturb his process. "What about the opposition? Does this give them the initiative?"

"I get that" she nodded, "or are you saying that they had to give Marshal Serpental their battle plans in advance" she suggested. "Wouldn't those plans need altering during the battle?"

"He told half to attack and half to defend," Indra replied. "That's all the direction he gave, plans and adjusting the plans falls to the commanders."

"Then how does he know that they missed something, maybe they have a different plan" she asked shrugging, "they could be building a more decisive plan where he is focusing on a single maneuver" she suggested.  She didn't wait for an answer to that suggestion and instead moved to a more relevant question. "How long do such training encounters usually run, and can you tell how far they are into this one?"

"I don't think he plans to fight a night battle," Indra replied. "So no more than an hour."

"Cavalry finds gaps and weaknesses to get into the enemy rear, disrupt their command and destroy their supplies. So for them to miss a gap like that is going to disappoint a commander," Dread replied. "I've been yelled at for it."

"Now that makes sense" she nodded to Dread, "an hour isn't too bad" she said to Indra. "I was hoping to be back by then, but I can wait" she said before she began eating more heartily and watching the militia and commanders.

"He's bringing his engines up too close to the first line," Serpental said of the defenders. "One good push and the line will be pushed back into them, archers are too far back." A few moments later the attackers forced a breech and the attacking force swarmed the engines, and the archers weren't able to fight them off as the sides were mixed. "The defenders will have to abandon their engines at any time now. I'd say that bungles go to the defenders, but the attackers tried to give away the fight first." He glanced around and saw his commanding officer and his Grand Duchess and turned a gimlet eye to a younger officer.

"The Lord Marshall said not to announce them," he shrugged.

"The defenders were the younger troopers?" Oldwine asked.

"Most them under five years of field time," Serpental agreed. "Most scarcely a year. I'll age them up."

"My lady, I see that we didn't leave you to perish."

Tamalyn smiled and gave a shrug, "it was a busy day. The calories were quite necessary. I have been enjoying the training session. I am afraid that I have not had much time to observe previously. It has been interesting, I may make more of an effort in the future" she said with sincerity. "I do apologize for interupting" she added. "Unless you plan to do night exercises" she said cautiously, "I am prepared to wait until you have finished. Please, carry on" she added with another small smile.

"It's over," he ran his fingers through his hair and stretched his back. "Night attacks start tomorrow, I want to test our scouts and dwarves ability to attack at night." He glanced at her plate. "I'm sure the cooks have something more filling than that if you'd care to join me in the mess."

Tamalyn looked at her plate with only a couple of pieces of fruit and cheese left. "I could eat again" she agreed standing and slipping her chair back into her bag. She picked up the plate and followed Serpental to the mess hall, eating as she walked. "What made you decide to return to service?" She asked between bites.

"It does seem to be attracting good people" she replied to his comment. "I must admit that I have found the province to be an enjoyable challenge. Though, I must admit that I am still struggling to fully understand the miltia side of things. That has been my biggest challenge."

"Army is army," he shrugged with a small grin. "Though our militia is more army than most provinces, most militias are more constable than soldier, we have separated those things more than the rest. Had we not, we'd have been beaten pretty badly, and our commander wouldn't also be Lord Marshall of the Frontier."

She nodded, "we had to be. We can't just request help from our neighbors or the crown.  We are pretty much on our own. Which works for me because I don't really enjoy asking others for help" she added with a shrug. "Do you have any observations or recommendations on the militia? Advice, I do like to ask for" she smiled, "there is no point in having well trained and experienced people if you don't listen to their recommendations."

Tamalyn shook her head, she didn't disagree with him."I suppose it is possible, though not very probable, that I have only met the quiet ones" she said considering. "I will keep your advice in mind" she added realizing she hadn't acknowledged the advice he gave.

Tamalyn followed him to his table. "Is there anything I can do to assist you or your family?" She was careful not to pry, she was not fishing for information, she was honestly offering assistance if needed.

"They're all moved in," he shrugged. "My wife has grown accustomed to new houses, she is rather impressed with Tamber City, so I have agreed to her unconditional demand that we buy a home there, preferably with some trees around it, and perhaps a stone courtyard with a fountain and all of those other things that I think she's been dreaming about for years."

"Sounds lovely" she nodded, "I am glad she likes it. You waited long enough that the majority of the city has been completed. When Lady Tigre brought young Lord Marcus, the city was full of holes" she smiled, "he was not impressed. Though, he did approve of the militia" she added. "I must admit that I am proud of the city, it is a mix of old and new with inspiration from multiple cities and yet has an architecture all its own. I hope that we will be able to grow to have more cities, in time" she shrugged trying not to plan too far ahead.

Tamalyn ate her second meal of the evening. "I have enjoyed meeting you" she said as they dinned. "I wasn't sure what to expect because no one really talks about you" she admitted, "and very few people really like to talk to me" she added with a shrug. She looked up as Oldwine entered the tent, she smiled at him and nodded. "I trust you have found everything satisfactory" she said with confidence. "Please, sit down and join us" she added.

He shrugged and grinned at Serpental. "Even if I found something to yell about, that is his job," he indicated Jamen. "But, I see nothing to yell at him about."

"Gratifying," Serpental nodded and turned his attention to one of his aides. "My compliments to the commanders of the legions in today's debacle. Travel rations tomorrow, starting with breakfast, let the cooks sleep in, they did their jobs to satisfaction." He paused over his soup. "That includes all officers and warrants."

"An old technique, but a good one. I presume that you'll meet with the battle staffs of those legions over breakfast?" Oldwine grinned.

"But of course, I'm sure that the smells of my steak and eggs will make their cold rations taste that much better."

"I won't be exercising a perk so much as emphasizing that they made a mistake, they treated war drill like drills, as the old saying goes, I want my drills to be bloodless battles and my battles to be bloody drills. So, if making them eat like soldiers, maybe I'll remind them to think and act like soldiers."
