"You watch for those that look tired or footsore, for anyone that may be sick, I tell a few jokes and see if anyone laughs, I wave and see how enthusiastic they seem," Malea reaplied. "And I too out candies now and then, a bit of a treat. We march them three miles, give them water and a rest and that would take the time to march another mile and start again. Mid-morning we stop, the warrants check everyone's feet and they all get tea and a bit to eat. Then three miles at a time until lunch, and then we start off again."

Tamalyn shadowed Malea for the day studying the soldiers and occasionally tossing out candies, Oldwine had taught her to always carry candy and now she understood why he had. She watched as feet were checked and noticed a lot of colorful ugly socks, which made her smile.

Finally they reached the camp for the night. "Malea, are there two sets of tents. They hadn't finished taking down last night's camp when we left, but he they are" she remarked.

"There are ," she nodded. "And you'll notice that the camp is laid out just like the last, even the names of the roads are the same, so everyone knows where to go each day. We have enough to lay out three camps actually, one is going to pass us tonight."

"I see, I had thought perhaps they were moved magically and questioned the need for that. This makes more sense.  So, how long before callops are ready? I must admit that I am hungry" she added.

"About an hour and half, if you want to eat when everyone sits down," she replied. "The last reach camp and we give them time to see to horses, drop their gear in their tents and clean up a bit."

"Very well, I will see to my horse while we wait for the rest of the column to arrive" she paused, "and yes, I know that there are saddler sergeants who would do that for me. But, I have no other duties here and there is no reason I cannot care for my horse" she added.

Tamalyn smiled at her in return, "why did you think I like to eat with the ranks? It lets me be seen eating the same foods as them, they get to say they ate with me" she shook her head, "and I don't have to wait. Oldwine suggested it a long time ago, it works because, though I am an officer I do not actually command.  Here in this camp, Malea commands" she shrugged.

"It would be worse," she grinned, "But he's been snacking all day." She checked her saddle and shook out the blanket before checking her mount's hooves. "We don't let him get too hungry, he might start seasoning a horse."

"I am surrounded by comedians," Dread sighed.

"Just be glad you aren't an officer" Tamalyn remarked, "you might starve"she teased him. She finished her horse, "why don't we wander around camp and chat with some of the men and see who night enjoy dining with me this evening" Tamalyn suggested. "I am curious about the new men. I want to see how they are holding up, and how nervous they will be astound me."

"I still need to visit with them, their families will be living in Tamber" she paused, "more than likely" she added. "The new soldiers will be in the frontier army, so they will only be in our chain of command briefly. Their families" she smiled, "I want to get a feel f" she was interrupted when two children ran past shrieking with laughter.

"And, there goes the easiest way to approach casually" she said following the children to the family section of the camp.

She nodded, "and children are the future" she agreed. Tamalyn had realized long ago that it was the children that would open the way to the parents.

Tamalyn followed the children into that section of the camp. She smiled at people she passed and gave children small candies. She looked for the person who had the most sway with these recently freed people. Out could be a man in armor, but it could also be a wife or mother. So she felt for the best person to speak with.

In this encampment the one that everyone seemed to listen to was an elderly woman who seemed to be organizing everything, most of the people she could see were women and children, those that had joined the army hadn't returned to camp yet, and the men that hadn't joined were seeing to livestock.

The older woman looked her over carefully. "Be nice if you could make way over there," she pointed in their direction of march, "was right about here, but we have something to wear, something to eat, and a bed to sleep in, so we're in good shape."

Tamalyn smiled, "I do not think that anyone could handle my doing such a thing. I envision panic and fear. Besides, is it not better to work for good things in life? As you said, there is food, clothing bedding and security. The march will make everyone stronger and make them feel accomplished. In the long run, it will boost confidence and pride. Everyone needs to feel those things" she added.  "May I ask you a personal question?"

"I suppose I survived because I was a domestic," she replied. "I started as a scullery maid, worked my way to being a cook and then the head of the kitchen. I worked in the Palace, and though that could be dangerous with all of the plots and intrigues going on around us, I managed to stay alive and learned to boss others about."

She nodded, "I seer. Well, I am glad that you are here. Natural leaders are hard to come by and things are easier for everyone when they have one. Though, it isn't always easier for the leader" she admitted with a shrug. "Thank you for taking time to speak with me.  I will let you get back to setting up camp. I hope I get to meet you again, when you arrive in Tamber" she added. Tamalyn wandered away again making her way back forwards the military section of camp. She passed out pieces of candy as she went hoping it would brighten the day for them.

When she was well away from the refugee camp she finally spoke about it.  "A palace cook, she must be really good to have survived so long. Perhaps she will give Branor a challenge, if she decides to open a restaurant" she said to Indra. "Let's go ask Malea about her" she added making her way towards Malea's tents.

Malea was pouring over the strength rolls. "Less dropped out today," she observed to her staff. "Tell the warrants to keep a good eye on their feet. Their boots should be broken in, they have good socks, make sure they change socks on the march and that they use horse soap to wash their feet."
