"I had a long course of massages in a private room at the establishment I visited," she replied loftily.

Upstairs of the bar they were in was where the Hammerleck family could usually be found. Which was why she had looked up there, though she made no effort to go upstairs.

Tamalyn looked at Indra, "they offer massages, or was the floor show enough for you?" She asked her. "If the latter, I am looking forward to the show" she said, "it will have improved much since I was there before."

"I did," Indra replied with a cheeky grin. "My muscles were in knots, fixed that straightaway."

Oldwine greeted his youngest sister on the front porch. He took her hands and turned them palm up and slid her sleeve back, he found the bruises that he expected. His eyes met hers and he guided her and his toddler nephew into the house, but placed his hand in the chest of her husband and stopped him from entering. "You're not welcome," Oldwine said in a cold voice as his mothers guided their youngest daughter deeper into the house.

"Fine then, soldier boy," Berk Krande snapped, "send out my wife and we'll be shed of this place."

"My sister remains here," Oldwine said firmly.

Berk looked over his brother in law. He was taller than Oldwine, and much larger, and this gave him confidence; but, as he pushed forward and the restraining hand kept him from advancing, he looked surprised. The Marshall of the Frontier was a tall man, though not so tall as his brother-in-law, and though he was wide of shoulder, he was narrow of hip. His body was compact, muscle where Berk carried fat. "You," Oldwine said in a cold, calm voice. "Will not enter my house, or those of my family."

"You speak for your family now?" Berk scoffed. "Think that stripe makes you the headman?"

"The family has decided, since this is my house, I am the one to speak," Oldwine replied. "You live in a house at the sufferance of my family. That has been withdrawn. Your belongings are being loaded into a cart, those of my sister and her son will be brought here, where she will live."

"Be damned if you can have my son," Berk snapped.

"However you try and take her son from here," Oldwine showed a deadly smile. "Will fail. You set foot in my house and I'll take your head. Go to the courts and I'll see you imprisoned. You have beat a woman of the Oldwine house, her injuries are being examined by a sheriff of Tamber, a surgeon and a constable of the city. Your wagon will be waiting at the gate of the house you thought was yours. The rest of the Realm is east, Delloram to the north, Koriche to the east and Gamedian to the east and south. Don't tarry long in the Frontier, for it too lies under my authority." Oldwine smiled again. "Or, you can challenge me, take the beating, and when you heal months later, you'll still be leaving."

"You think you can take me?"

"I know that I can destroy that fat carcass that you carry about without a sweat," Oldwine promised. "I think that you're just smart anough to know that I'd kill you the second your hand touched a weapon, and you don't stand a chance with your hands." Oldwine nodded to two constables. "See him off."

Oldwine closed the door behind him as he entered his house.

"I have heard that you did a bit of exploring the evening it arrived" Tamalyn countered, though she did lead the way.

Inside it was dark, with only small candles to keep it from being pitch black. Tamalyn went to the bar and ordered a Valcastrian ale, then let the others place their order. Tamalyn turned and looked up at a second story indoor window and gave it a nod before taking her ale to a table.

"I think it is more about their physiques. I am not saying that any of them are ugly, but they are all very fit and that is appealing. You are not the first to comment on it, so I have had time to think about my answer. Now, where should we go first? I was thinking we could start with Trooper's Retreat and have a few drinks before we visit the bars with entertainers, just to get us in the right mood. Besides, the Hammerleck's may be moving" she added, "so I may not get another chance to welcome them."

Indra and several ladies of the guard left their uniforms for street clothes, but there was a squad of uniformed men with them as well.

"Do you have even one unattractive guard?" Bressa murmured in their ear as they left.

She held him to his promise that night, after a long day of shopping they sat in her parlor over a bottle of wine and a small repast of bread and cheese. “There’s much I really can’t say,” he shrugged. “I am good at getting into places and discovering their secrets. I needed to discover how close Gamalara was to securing alliances with Denenstaer and Quaraman, far too close it seems, and so I took more direct steps than I anticipated to end that threat.”

“So if I were a willing accomplice to my father’s plans?” She asked.

“You weren’t,” he answered without answering, which was an answer to itself.

“Are you in the army?” She asked.

“Nothing like that,” he grinned. “I don’t really care for the thought of army life. Too much marching. I suppose being a scout could prove more interesting, but even that is too regimented for a man of my sort. I like free action, freedom to take any action that I must to see my mission complete.”

“Are you Palatine?”

“I work with the Order, in a way,” he replied. “But I’m fairly free to seek my own employment.”

Another careful evasion, she noted “But you answer to Lord Kernan?”

“I’ve worked with him before, he’s a good man and he’s very loyal to those he considers friends,” Able replied. “I do not answer to him, but our interests have been in accord on many occasions. He knows that there are questions that I can’t answer, and he respects that, as do I with those things I know that he can’t discuss.”

“You hold many of these secrets?”

He laughed at that. “I suppose that you could say so,” he shrugged. “If my mother were still alive, I couldn’t answer her either, about many things.”

“Is there anyone you can tell?”

“Very few,” he grinned. “But, I can’t tell you about them either.”

“So,” she asked. “What happens now?”

“Now, I’m drinking wine, and soon enough I’m going to my bed and sleeping for as long as I can stand it. I’ve been on the move for years now, and I have aches that won’t go away, and my mind feels like a spring that’s been over-tightened. I am taking time to heal and unwind.”

“And me?” She asked.

“The same for you,” he smiled. “I’ll be keeping you close for a bit, you’re still not out of danger, at least to a certainty, and when I freed you, I took up that responsibility. You can walk away, if you like, but I think you’re safer here, at least until you learn more of the world and how to take care of yourself.”

“So, you’re going to teach me to fight?” She asked.

He looked a little surprised at that. “I hadn’t really considered that,” he admitted. “Your life hasn’t really prepared you for that, but, you have choices now, if that is what you choose, then I believe that I can help you there.”

She looked around the room. “Do you know that I’ve never slept in a room alone before?”

“No, I didn’t,” he looked surprised.

“My governess, Kardae, she slept in my room with me,” she replied. “She was always close by. Never in the same bed, that might lead me to have impure thoughts, after all. I’ve never been in a room alone, even in the privy.”

“Awkward,” he grimaced.

“I suppose, it should be, but I’m used to it. I’ll get used to having solitude, I’m sure.”

“I think they worried too much about your purity,” he smiled. “You shared a bedroll with me for days and came out none the worse for it.”
“You were a gentleman,” she agreed with a small smile. “You still are.”

“Good upbringing,” he shrugged.

“Many were brought up well, that turned out otherwise,” she replied darkly, then looked at the bottle. “It’s gone,” she pouted prettily. “I’ve never had more than a glass of watered wine before, now I’ve had a half of a bottle.”

“You should have a glass or two of water before you sleep,” he cautioned her. “And with that, I am off to my own bed, I’m right next door if you need me.”

"It was mostly the melts that I didn't care for. Mud, everywhere, it made everything so dirty" Tamalyn laughed, "that is why everyone keeps saying it's so clean. There aren't mud stains all over" she shook her head. "Hesterbur was probably dirty because of its gray marble" she added thinking about the dress shop owners comment about it being dirty. "Your house was dark, but this one wasn't" she said, "we added windows all over for light." Tamalyn rose, "I will let you see to your packing and go change. I don't go out often and I am going to take advantage of this rare free time. I really enjoyed talking to you this evening. Thank you" she added as she left.

Tamalyn went up to her room and changed into evening clothes. Then she, Bressa and the guards headed off to visit the club's.

"Your father is seeing to it," she smiled. "He dumped everything here to make sure that I'm too busy to bother him while he works. He does promise me a lot of sunshine, Valcastria was so dark."

"Understandable" she nodded, "when are you moving? Is the house not ready, or are you not ready yet? If the house isn't ready, would you like me to finish it for you" she offered.
