Chapter 1
From the Sea

He was Scottish and his partner was French.  Like any typical Scotsman, he spent his days in French class flicking bits of rolled up paper at the geeks at the front row and drawing graffiti on the books instead of actually learning the language.  He could say 'bonjour' and that was about it, so it was just as well that the person he would be working with on this mission was a little less ignorant than he was.  Vanessa Cameron was her name -- a woman of many talents.  She was apparently a cracking speed skater (although Morris had yet to witness that certain skill) and a good swimmer to boot.  The latter came in handy, due to the fact they had to swim to the island to avoid being detected by any wandering German patrols.  The easy thing would have been to arrive by boat and pretend to be some tourists, but since the German colony had become such an important part to the empire -- they would have been shot on sight.  Sabotage attempts were common, so anyone who wasn't Scandanavian, Russian or German was instantly thought to be a spy.  In Morris and Vanessa's case -- that was completely true.

The island was colder than Morris expected, he had been warned that it'd be icey beforehand but he brushed it off and said that 'he lived in Scotland, that's what our summers are like'.  The frogman waddled along the pebble-beach in his flippers and soaking wetsuit, flicking off his mask and unfastening his oxygen tank from his back.  The disappearing weight was a relief to the man, who groaned and dropped his backside on to the rocks, looking out to the wild sea in the distance.  He didn't like starting missions with a swim, Morris was the kind of guy that preferred to jump out of a helicopter or parachute out of a high-flying plane instead of coming in from the sea.  He was knackered already.

Sitting there, on the beach, looking out made him think about the times he spent with Samantha, before he left her on that little island and promised her he'd be back.  There was a great little beach just down from her bar, and Morris used to go down there with a bottle of beer and just watch the fishermen and boats approaching the harbour, their hulls carrying god-knows-what.  They'd sit there together, sometimes not even saying a word for an hour.  They had that kind of relationship that didn't need things to be said.  Sitting next to her was sometimes all he wanted.

"I hope you've memorised the plans."  Morris looked up at his partner; the low sun in the dawn sky meant he had to shield his eyes with his hand.  She was going to be the translater when they went to the Russian encampment, unless any of them happened to speak English.  They were right on schedule, which meant that someone would be coming to meet them and take them back to the camp.  There, they would be given everything that they needed -- uniforms, credentials and bombs -- to put the island's mine out of commission temporarily.

Morris raised an eyebrow when she mentioned that she had memorised the plans perfectly because she was Canadian, and apparently memorising things down to a T was what Canadians did.  Maybe that's why they always did things wrong, because they'd memorised the wrong thing.

The arrival of the Russian woman meant that they weren't going to get much time to catch their breath.  There was no sign of any kind of car or jeep, so it looked as if they were going to walk back to the base.  He did as he was asked, and hid away his things next to Vanessa's equipment, running his hand down his wetsuit before peeling away the upper half so it dangled at the waist -- he wore a white t-shirt beneath it, although the reason for not taking the rest of the wetsuit off was because he wore only a pair of boxers beneath it.  The suit was already tighter than he liked, and there was no room down there for another layer of trousers.

"Ladies first."  Morris said sarcastically, as he allowed the Russian woman -- and Vanessa -- to walk ahead while he kept watch behind them.  He kept his side-arm in his arms in case they bumped in to a group of Germans that weren't too happy to see them, but the walk was rather uneventful.  He kept a good enough distance away from Vanessa so that he didn't have to talk to her, allowing her to chat away to the Russian if she wished to.  When they got to the Russian camp, he put the gun back in it's holster, satisfied that they were safe for now.

After keeping away from her for the entire walk, Morris then changed his tune and couldn't get any closer to Vanessa if he tried.  While this Dunya lassie could speak a decent level of English, Vanessa was the only other one out of them that could understand both languages.  The last thing Morris wanted to do was to stand there looking like an idiot because he didn't know what a soldier was telling him.

Alexey Kirechenko walked out of one of the buildings, dressed in casual clothes as if this were his day off.  A pair of jeans and a parka jacket to keep him warm: despite having lived in Russia their entire life, the Kirechenko brothers were wimps when it came to the slightest bit of cold, and even a woman could handle it better than they could.  "Is this them?"  He asked Dunya, nodding in their direction.  It was a stupid question, of course it was them.  She wasn't just going to wander in to camp with two random strangers that she found at the beach.  "Mikhail has their gear in the barracks."  He looked at his watch.  "When you doing the run?"

Morris understood absolutely nothing, and looked to Vanessa in hopes that she would whisper in his ear exactly what the Russian was saying to his female comrade.  Looking around, it was clear to see that the operation they had here was small, with only a few buildings and a handful of Russians manning it.  Why did they even bother?

The problem with being surrounded by foreigners was that you had no idea if they were saying something about you.  And what Vanessa was telling him could have been the opposite of what they were saying.  There were two men on the opposite side of the courtyard who were grinning, one of them had a quick glance over in his direction and the Scotsman instantly took it that they were saying something about him.  Of course, they weren't actually but the feeling of paranoia was already setting in.

Mikhail Vassily Kirechenko was sitting in the darkest corner of the barracks, next to a table with a pair of German uniforms, strange yellow suits and various other things which were meant for Morris and Vanessa.  The radio was on, although the only station he could listen to was some strange German show where the two hosts were talking about some new religion.  It was from crap like this that Mikhail had learned the German language -- it was either that, or sit in silence.  And Mikhail wasn't the kind of person who'd pick up a book and try to learn it from that.

The faint chill of the outside wind grabbed Mikhail's attention, and standing at the door were the two agents that had been sent to assist them.  Dunya was with them as well.  "Close the damn door."  He moaned to her, shivering a little to exaggerate his point.  It wasn't that cold, but because the heating wasn't working right now then it felt as if he were back in his native Russia.  He swivelled on his chair, adjusting the sleeves of his shirt so that they were just a few inches further up his arms.  "What one of you speaks Russian?"  He asked, looking at both of them.  The woman seemed to understand what he was saying, whilst the man looked clueless.  "The one with the tits, eh?  Fantastic."  He grinned, slamming his hand on the top of the desk.  "There's your new uniforms.  The guy's toilet is through there..."  Mikhail nodded his head in it's direction.  "...but unfortunately, there isn't a woman's one.  So you're just gonna have to get changed here."

Mikhail looked at Dunya who had begun to laugh, something which didn't impress him that much.  He leaned back in his chair, crossing one leg over the other and folding his arms.  "Yeah, the keyword is 'try'.  It doesn't happen very often.  And by very often, I mean never."  The Russian muttered, turning his attention back to Vanessa now that Dunya was taking Morris in to the toilet.  "So you want to know what you're going to be doing then, huh?  Well I'll spin you the short version.  Grab a seat."

Mikhail got to his feet and picked up one of the yellow bundles on the table, revealing a big radiation suit which he dangled in front of him as if he were in front of a mirror and trying to imagine what it would look like on him.  "This is what you'll be wearing on top of your uniform.  It's heavy.  It's hot.  And it's a nightmare to wear.  So... I figure it's perfect for you."  He scratched his nose and placed it back on the tabletop.  "It's also going to save your life.  If the explosives detonate pre-maturely or you accidentally drop something in that mine, then a lot of nasty gas is going to start floating about.  Believe me -- I know how dangerous the stuff is."

He had witnessed it first hand -- one of the Russians had accidentally caused his tank of fuel to crack, releasing the gas and causing him to choke and die a very painful death.  Mikhail didn't dare go close to him to help, he knew that he would end up the same.  "I hope you know how to set a detonator."

Morris, on the other hand, was taken to the toilet where he was told to get changed.  The German outfit definitely had that 'bad guy' look, though it sure was comfortable to wear.  "Sounds like you guys have a fun time about here."  He said to her, looking around and pushing the door open slowly with his finger tips.  "I... think I'll be able to find my way back."  He said, giving her a faint smile as he walked inside with his new clothes.

Vanessa eyed up the large yellow suit that was laid back down on the table after Mikhail had shaken it out and held it up for her viewing pleasure. It looked awkward to be inside and warm. Uncomfortable, awkward, and warm; not a great combination for someone who liked the ability to move freely and did so in the water and with a pair of ice skates attached to the bottom of her feet. "And remember: you're not destroying the entire base.  We need you to cause an accident that disrupts their production for a few weeks.  Anything else, and we risk having a war on our hands here.  This fuel they've found is rich stuff, and they know that everyone wants to get their hands on it.  We need to gently push them off this island in a way that they'll never want to come back."  Mikhail scratched some of his growing stubble, looking towards Dunya who had just recently re-joined them.  "You'll be taking the long way round to the base.  Arriving at this little coastal town here which acts as a 'gate' to their in-land compound.  Grab a truck, show some ID and just keep driving along that straight road until you get to the base."

Adalinda had made sure that if the Russians were allowed to live on the same island as her, that their camp was located in the most inaccessible point of the island.  The road which followed the circumference of the island stopped a few miles away from them, which meant it was impossible for them to drive a truck to the mine and fill it up with some fuel.  Instead, they had to cut through the island along an iced-over path which linked the Russians to the mine.  Unfortunately, it also meant that in order to bring back the fuel -- a couple of them had to volunteer to skate along the path and bring the fuel back with them on their backs.  Mikhail hated doing it, yet somehow Dunya always managed to get him to raise his hand.  He wasn't even a good ice-skater -- his brother was better -- yet Alexey was always busy.

Morris returned from the bathroom, wearing the German uniform and holding his wetsuit in his hand.  He dumped it to one side, figuring that they'd be returning here to pick it back up once they had finished their mission.  "Well Vanessa -- wanna fill me in?"

Morris listened to the plan, semi-distracted by Vanessa getting stripped and changing in to new clothes right in front of them instead of going for some privacy.  He was half-expecting her to be naked underneath the wetsuit, so there was a bit of disappointment (from both men) when she peeled away her second-skin to reveal the swimsuit below.  The plan sounded easy, at least the way she said it anyway.  Morris knew better, he knew that it was going to be much more difficult than that.  And that was probably the reason why the Russians weren't doing it themselves -- well, that and the fact that Dunya, Mikhail and Alexey's faces were all well-known to the Germans.  After all, they were frequent visitors to the mine, as well as some of their other comrades.  Morris and Vanessa were strangers, and could blend in easier.

He grimaced a little as he saw the yellow radiation suit they'd be wearing, but he understood it's purpose and would rather be wearing it instead of risking death.  With both members of the team now ready to go, he adjusted his shirt and watched as Mikhail packed the two radiation suits in to a pair of large rucksacks, which he then handed them both.  "You'll want to put these on when you get to the mine, no point in walking about with them before that because you're just going to look silly."  Mikhail said to Vanessa, returning to his chair again and looking to Dunya.  "Well -- do you want to get them moving?  I'm kind of busy here."  He said to her, although it was clearly obvious that that wasn't the case at all.

Morris slung the bag over his back and turned to his partner, nodding his head towards the door as if to suggest they start getting on with this thing.  The quicker it got done, the faster he got to go home and away from this island.  If Starling had another mission with these Russians, he was sure as hell not going to put his hand up next time.

"No -- nothing."  Morris said, turning to look at the journey in front of them.  While the island wasn't exactly large, it would still have been nice to travel by vehicle.  The set-up was odd, it definitely looked like there had once been a road which went right to the front door of the Russian camp, but some sort of demolition work had taken place -- causing mountains of rocks and trees to have collapsed on to the surface, as well as having more holes than a typical Scottish road.  With their Russian guide now heading back to her camp, it left Morris and Vanessa some more alone time to walk the short distance to the German town.

The backpack was heavy, Morris wanted to complain but he decided against it.  He'd carried worse, although not for as long as this.  Vanessa wasn't moaning about it so he decided to stay quiet for the time being; the town was just up ahead anyway and in no time at all they'd be dumping their equipment in the back and driving for the rest of the way.

"OK.  I'm going to go and get us a truck.  Just wait here and I'll come and pick you up."

They came out of nowhere, and before Morris could even work out what was going on -- they had him getting to his knees and putting his hand behind his head.  He knew German, but all he could hear was shouting and nonsense.  They weren't making any sense, accusing him of being some sort of intruder or questioning whether he was actually German.  The Russian engineer back at the camp had worked out everything, he had sorted them out with fake IDs -- except unfortunately for Morris he couldn't reach it because if he did: they were going to fill him with enough bullets to fill a few dozen gun magazines.

The bullet was too close for comfort, they were more than prepared to shoot without asking questions.  Well, they were asking questions but they weren't letting him answer.  The backpack was obviously out of place, but there might have been a good reason for having it.  "Just... just look in my pocket!"  He shouted to them, using his knowledge of German to respond to what they were saying.  He could speak the language, but he didn't sound German.  Then again -- had any of these men ever heard a Scottish accent before?

Things weren't looking good for him.  The soldiers had rummaged through his pockets and found the fake ID, and were all bickering away.  Had the Russian messed up somehow, was something out of place?  He just hoped that Vanessa stayed away, and didn't get herself involved.  If he couldn't complete the mission -- at least she had to.
